Help a linux newbie out!

Post by nicsta »

I am completely new to linux and i have no idea how to use it. I have installed mandrake 10 under VPC 2004 and have no idea what to do next. Ive tried looking at the how-to sections on this website, but they are confusing.

Can anyone give me a run down on how to do this, linux is so darn confusing!

Help-out

Hello Nicsta,

Depends on what you are planning to do. Are you trying to install and run SheepShaver?

Then take yourself through the trouble reading this guide:

starting from terminal window

Hello Nicsta,

To get some information you could start from a terminal window.
assuming you installed the rpm, you can type

"/usr/bin/SheepShaver"

and see what shows. Otherwise go to the directory where you installed and type
"./SheepShaver"

Post your findings here,

Hello "PennyWise"

I guess I take this as a compliment, having upgraded my rank (through hard work) to reflect being a follower of one of history' finest men!

I'll stop posting now, because otherwise I would become a HELP! " Jim Drew Wants to Sue Me"

Thanks

No, no. Jim Drew only wants to sue ME. If you post as much as I am, you get the title "Alexandre Daigle."

SS

Post by nicsta »

OK, ive managed to get SS to boot now, however it is very slow. Basilisk II can run os 8.1 faster then this. Booting problem turned out to be video and rom issues.

The other thing, SS crashes when os 8 loads. sometimes it will bring up a desktop sometimes it wont. either way, it freezes on bootup.

is this because of os 8? should i get a copy of 8.6 and try?

slow and buggy

Post by Cat_7 »

Hello Nicsta,

Congratulations are in place here!

Shure, SheepShaver is rather slow in compared to Basilisk II. But then it needs to do a whole lot more work.

About the crashing: check the extensions you are loading. Try starting SheepShaver with extensions disabled and slowly make your own set of working extensions.

You can try to run 8.6 but there will be no speedgain.

SheepShaver is not mature code yet, some applications don't run. And sometimes it crashes.

As far as emulators go, there is never that guarantee.....

Good Luck,
