Desktop printers that send output to an application

In a post in the QEMU forum, CharlesS pointed out that it's possible to use ResEdit to modify the Desktop Printer Utility so that it can create a LaserWriter desktop printer that sends the PostScript output to an application to be processed. Here's his post:

I've put together a modified Desktop Printer Utility and a sample AppleScript application that show how this works. The AppleScript merely copies the output file to the desktop, but you can modify it to do anything you want - for example, rename the file and copy it to an OS X (or Windows) folder for printing, conversion to PDF, etc. Here's the utility and sample app (which seems to need to exist in order to create a Desktop Printer):

Incidentally, you can create multiple Desktop Printers, each using a different application for processing files.

Thanks again to CharlesS for noticing this ancient option, and I hope someone might find this useful.

EDIT: Fixed download link; linked to the wrong file originally.

That link seems to have gone wrong again. Here is one that seems to work:

Four years later, I found I needed this, and found that the link didn't work, so here is a better one:
