SheepShaver not starting MacOS El Capitan 10.11.6 (15G1611)

Post by claudiop »

Hi
I'm a newbie to SheepShaver. I've installed as below but the app tries to start and then quits immediately. The Console errors I'm getting are:

15/09/2017 10:32:38.632 SheepShaver[17356]: CPSGetCurrentProcess(): This call is deprecated and should not be called anymore.
15/09/2017 10:32:38.632 SheepShaver[17356]: set_foreground_operation_state(): This call is deprecated and should not be called anymore.

I'm trying to setup SheepShaver 2.4 (2014-02-01) on Mac Pro (Early 2008), Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 (15G1611), Processor 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, SN YM8017W5XYK.

I've installed SheepShaver as per instructions at SheepShaver Installation and User Guides and SheepShaver builds for Mac OS X, links and downloads. Installation is:

/Applications/SheepShaver [directory]
/Applications/SheepShaver/keycodes
/Applications/SheepShaver/Mac OS ROM.rom [this is the "newworld86.rom" rename]
/Applications/SheepShaver/ReadMeFirst.txt
/Applications/SheepShaver/Setup Manual.webloc
/Applications/SheepShaver/SheepShaver.app
/Applications/SheepShaver/SheepShaver scripts

From Redundant Robot I've downloaded the new world ROM file "newworld86.rom"
From Macintosh Garden I've downloaded the OS9 image "MacOS904CD_Intl.ZIP"

I've tried different ROMs and renamed them both Mac OS ROM and ROM to no avail.
I've tried to the OS Sierra workaround by copying to desktop, removing app from SheepShaver folder, moving desktop app back to SheepShaver folder to no avail.

I'm stumped

Any ideas much appreciated
cheers

Progress

I downloaded the SheepShaverPrefs.zip and expanded/ran the app. In the ROM field in put:

/Applications/SheepShaver/Mac OS ROM.rom

SheepShaver then ran. I'm now about to load the OS9 system file

Progress stalled at OS disk

I tried a Mac OS 9 'generic' disk and mounted it on desktop. Ran SS and it ejects my CD-ROM from drive and the mac icon flashes

I tried a disk image of OS9.0.4 "MacOS904CD_Intl.zip" from Macintosh Garden. It expands to a ".toast" image. I then mounted the image and used OS X Disk Utility to created a new ".cdr" image from the mounted ".toast" image. I locked the ".cdr" image in Finder and in SS Prefs added the path name of the new ".cdr" to Volumes. I saved the Prefs, quit SS, then restarted SS but it stalls at the flashing Mac icon looking for OS image.

I'm now stuck, any ideas appreciated

cheers

PS: I found the problem. I moved my .cdr image to the desktop and pointed the Volumes pathname to it. It's now running through the install process

Progress..

SS running OK for a while including the UNIX shared folder on the desktop. However, after a few changes to the Prefs and reboots, now on startup I get an error saying "The disk "Unix" cannot be used because it cannot be found. I've checked and my shared folder "SheepShaver Shared" is definitely on my OS X desktop and the SS Prefs pathname is correct. Here's my Prefs:

disk /Users/claudio/Desktop/Mac OS 9.cdr
disk /Applications/SheepShaver/MacOS9.dsk
cdrom /dev/disk11
extfs /Users/claudio/Desktop/SheepShaver Shared
screen win/1280/800
windowmodes 0
screenmodes 0
seriala
serialb /dev/null
rom /Applications/SheepShaver/Mac OS ROM.rom
bootdrive 0
bootdriver 0
ramsize 268435456
frameskip 1
gfxaccel true
nocdrom false
nonet false
nosound false
nogui false
noclipconversion false
ignoresegv true
ignoreillegal false
jit true
jit68k false
keyboardtype 5
ether slirp
keycodes true
keycodefile keycodes
mousewheelmode 1
mousewheellines 3
dsp /dev/dsp
mixer /dev/mixer
ignoresegv true
idlewait true

help?

cheers

Progress....seems OK

I ran Cocktail and did a cleanup of OS/User files, rebooted and did a startup file-system check, rebooted and ran SS and it know appears OK and can see the Unix directory

Well, so many messages with various issues that could have been avoided. Good that you could find workarounds yourself. Still, for clarification:

1. The ROM file
/Applications/SheepShaver/Mac OS ROM.rom [this is the "newworld86.rom" rename]
It would have worked without the need of SheepShaverGUI if you would have renamed the file "Mac OS ROM" without the .rom file name extension as instructed in the setup guide.

2. Install disk
A physical CD-ROM can indeed not be used in OSX 10.8 and later as described in the setup manual.

3. Install disk image
I tried a disk image of OS9.0.4 "MacOS904CD_Intl.zip" from Macintosh Garden. It expands to a ".toast" image. I then mounted the image and used OS X Disk Utility to created a new ".cdr" image from the mounted ".toast" image.
The .toast image would have worked fine without conversion to .cdr.
I moved my .cdr image to the desktop and pointed the Volumes pathname to it.
The location is irrelevant as long as you make sure the path is correctly entered in the Volumes list. The path may have been not correct to the previous location of the file.
Or... maybe the image volume was mounted in the host OSX? Then the guest cannot use it.

4. Making changes in Prefs
after a few changes to the Prefs and reboots, now on startup I get an error saying "The disk "Unix" cannot be used because it cannot be found.
That is a message that will typically appear when changes are made in Preferences and SheepShaver is not subsequently fully quit and launched again. Restarting the SheepShaver emulated machine will not work to read the changed settings.

5. Remove install image from Volumes lis
You may have done that by now, but when the installation is successful, the install disk image needs to be removed from the Volumes list.

Ronald, thank you for the clarifications.

I've been using it to run an old computer music typesetting applic Coda's Finale 2.6.3 that's involved loading a lot of special music fonts.

It's been quite stable and I've been surprised at how fast everything is in emulation.

thanks again, cheers
