SheepShaver quits on me!

I'm on OS 10.9.5 and I've been trying for hours to get SheepShaver to start up. It quits instantly.

I think I've got all my files in order...?

I've also tried the workaround where I copy the SheepShaver file to my desktop, delete the original and move the copy back. I think that's only for Sierra, but I still tried it! No luck. Perhaps the problem has been my ROM file this whole time.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

OH

I replaced the ROM file and got the..... the little floppy disk with a question mark. I'll keep trying to figure it out!

In the original collection of files, as shown in your screenshot, the Mac OS ROM file was an alias instead of the actual file. I suppose you now have the actual rom file in place. You can proceed with the setup.

Ahh thank you! I did manage to get SS working, though now it seems to be crashing. I get to the Mac OS 9 loading screen and then get the alert "SheepShaver quit unexpectedly."

I really don't want to have to start again, but ahhhh I think I have to start again :(

1. Which OS9 version is on the "Mac OS 9.toast" image?

2. Post here the content of your prefs file:

Launch Terminal (in /Application/Utilities/) and type at the prompt

Code: Select all

open ~/.sheepshaver_prefs
followed by a return.
The file will open in your default text editor. Select all content and copy and paste it here in your reply.

Apparently you did not yet do all the steps to set up SheepShaver. Yet, you already added the MYTH disks. Set up SheepShaver first. You can add other disks later.
Best remove those two lines from the prefs file. You can do that in your text editor.

In the prefs window you did not add the ROM file. (Better do that although the blank setting should not cause problems as long as the Mac OS ROM file is in place.)
You set RAM Size to 150MB. Better use 256MB or even 512MB
You set the window refresh rate to a very low frequency (15Hz). As your host machine is an Intel Mac, you can probably set it to "Dynamic".
What size did you make the MacOS9.img?

Did you already install MacOS 9.0.4 or does SheepShaver crash before you got to that point? (As it is now, SheepShaver will still start up from the installation disk.)

OhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhH

I had SS installed and working, and then installed Myth after, and that's when it started crashing. I thought by trashing everything I'd be able to start over, didn't realise it was all still there.

It's working now, thank you for your help! Think I'll hold off on playing Myth haha.

Did you adjust settings as I suggested above?

And did you now remove the installation disk from the volumes list after installing MacOS 9?

Yep, fixed all of the preference settings, as per your suggestion!

As for the installation disk, were you referring to the toast file here?

Thank you again for your help!

With this setting, you will start up from the installer disk (the .toast image). You need to run the installer to install the OS onto the other disk that you created. After the installation is complete, you need to remove the .toast image from the volumes list, quit SheepShaver, and launch SheepShaver again. Then SheepShaver will start up from the other disk with the newly installed MacOS 9.

Explanation: SheepShaver will always start up from the first bootable volume on the list. If the installer disk is still there, it will start up from the installer disk and not from the installed MacOS.

Ohhhh suddenly everything makes sense ahah! I'm installing OS now :) Is it normal for the estimated time remaining to keep.... increasing?

The installation process may sometimes stall.
The setup guide is not written for nothing. When you follow the guide, you will read this note:
In some configurations the system installation may stall at the very beginning while “Updating Apple hard disk drivers”. It seems to happen especially with some system install CD disk images.

Wait at least several minutes to be sure that installation is indeed not proceeding past this stage, then cancel the operation and quit the installer. You may need to force quit SheepShaver as well.

Then start again, but in the screen where the actual installation can be started (usually the first screen after the software license agreement), click the “Options…” button and uncheck the option to “Update Apple Hard Disk Drivers”. Installation should now proceed normally.

Honestly, you should be paid for this work! Thank you so much for your help! SheepShaver is up and running, and so is Myth. Time to relive my childhood!
