Is this on the installed system, or when booting off the CD? You need to do that on the installed system.

It's on the installed system.

I am about to upload my fresh install of MacOS 8.6 to rule out installation issues.
Would MEGA be OK or do you prefer another server?

Ronald did post two very useful tidbits some time ago:
Delete Prefs File.app
Zap PRAM.app
The files should be included in the zip files available for download.
Best try those too, in case some setting was garbled.
You will have to re-create SheepShaver Preferences, obviously. ;)

I'm okay with MEGA. What should I do once I download what you're uploading?

Post subject:  Re: Installing games

I got a notice when trying to open "Delete Prefs File" and "Zap PRAM," saying that they are damaged and can't be opened.

Feel free to try the MacOS8.6 image here please: https://mega.nz/#!l9kl1R7I!mfcV0ezkRHXa ... hdEmlolv0w
Unzip the file and add the .img to the SheepShaver volumes tab as only device.
Start SheepShaver.

The prefs and nvram files are both hidden in your user directory.
You may also delete them manually, the apps were meant to ease the process.

Should I reinstall the operating system from scratch for it to work? What about adding a hfv file? I'm still getting no sound, and error -225 from selecting the rate on the Sound settings.

The MacOS8.6 image is made from scratch and is bootable with sound on my side.
If you still can´t enable sound, I would delete the nvram file and try enabling sound again after restart.
If sound still won´t work, I´m clueless how to proceed.
Maybe try on another host OS?

What would the nvram file be called?

Post subject:  Re: Installing games

The nvram file is called ".sheepshaver_nvram", it is located in your Home folder and it is invisible in the Finder.

In the original SheepShaver download are two scripts. When you run the "Zap PRAM" script, it will delete the nvram file.

I double-clicked Zap PRAM, but it says it's damaged and can't be opened.

Hm, I tried the scripts in the Feb. 2014 SheepShaver download and they are OK.

But the Zap PRAM script in the separate scripts download was indeed damaged. I replaced the scripts with working copies: http://ronaldpr.home.xs4all.nl/sheepsha ... pts_UB.zip

Sorry, still damaged for me.

At this point, I just want to find an old computer that can play Mac OS 9 naturally.

Even the G4 Minis can do this with the 2013 installer CD. I've got two: they're wonderful to work with for old software.

Something happens with the zip archive during upload and/or download that makes the included scripts "damaged". Before upload the archive expands in working scripts. After upload and again download the scripts appear "damaged". Very strange. I will investigate what goes wrong.

You could try storing it in an auto-extracting DMG; that should preserve whatever's getting lost here.

IIRC, I once zipped a working Mac TrueType font (meaning it contained font data in the resource fork) under 10.8 that was damaged when unzipped under 10.6 in Parallels. Couldn't find the reason though and I've never encountered this again.

Post subject:  Re: Installing games

This is a simple script created in Script Editor, no resource fork, here zipped in macOS 10.13 and again unzipped in macOS 10.13. Still works fine after unzipping, but not anymore after uploading the zip file to my own website and downloading it again. Cannot even open the script in Script Editor again. Very strange. As if the zip file that is downloaded is not the same as the one that was uploaded. I will look into it later.

The scripts included in the Feb. 2014 SheepShaver download work fine though, at least on my Mac:

The issue resolved itself overnight. I suppose that the persistently damaged download (with different browsers) after I replaced the files was caused by cashing on the server. As the scripts are not code signed, they probably need to be opened via the contextual menu (control-click or right-click). http://ronaldpr.home.xs4all.nl/sheepsha ... pts_UB.zip

It works now!

Post subject:  Re: Installing games

Bad news. Even after I deleted the Prefs file and zapped the PRAM, and after I redid everything, I STILL can't hear anything!

I went to the Monitors & Sound control panel in 8.6 to check, and the Sound Output is blank!

I now have everything working, including the sound, with the exception of one thing. The parts in one of my games that are supposed to play QuickTime videos are all white. Sometimes the music doesn't even play!

Would you please enlighten me, what finally made sound work?
Another riddle would be solved. :)

For QuickTime there are some version conflicts over the evolving versions.
QT Player 10.4 today plays near everything I throw on it.
Files from QT 2.X usually won't play with QT Player 4 etc.
its hard to guess at times at which QT version old files had been targeted, looking at the file´s time stamp may help.
