please help a newbie

Post by ehmdjii »

hello, i'm new here, so let me introduce myself: :)

i have got:
+ a decent PC
+ a WinXP Prof installation
+ a Debian installation
+ an empty 10GB partition
+ the 3 MacOS X 10.3 CDs
+ a bootable darwin CD
+ a bootable opendarwin CD

i want to:
+ run MacOS on my PC

now there are a couple of things i'm not sure about yet:
+ obviously i use ppc as emulator, but after looking around i found that there are already a couple of different builds. so which one should i take?
+ should i use the ppc.exe on windows or compile ppc myself under debian?
+ do i need darwin/opendarwin or can i start off with MacOS only?
+ will MacOS be installed onto an extra partition or on a virtual harddrive (.img)?
+ whats the difference between darwin and opendarwin?

thanks a lot in advance for answering any of these questions. :)

I think I'll just route you straight to the new FAQ Section. That'll answer all your questions. ;)

A :Anyway , its up to you...:D
+ do i need darwin/opendarwin or can i start off with MacOS only?

A :No need to...
+ will MacOS be installed onto an extra partition or on a virtual harddrive (.img)?
on a Virtual Harddrive (.img)
+ whats the difference between darwin and opendarwin?

I haven't used PearPC yet, but I have read somewhere that it runs best in windows, but you will have to try it on both to find out which is the best for you.

I'd say run it under the OS that you are more familiar with. ;)

That varies very much - on Windows the speed is stabile, but if you run it on GNU/Linux you can get either faster speed or much, much slower speed. Everything depends on your X config.

Just do a "File > Burn from Image". The format is auto-detected.

I'm going to recommed that you follow Captain Valors post....the FAQ section is very valuable. since 0.1.1 we have been posting there and still continue to. I am moving some post over there as we speak because things have been covered and people need to start thinking for themselves. If not then we mine as well tell you to stop back in a year and well give you a EXE with the whole thing setup on it

Suggestion : Cyber,

Why not move the MacOS X 10.3 not booting topic ,because it has a special-to-do trick aswell for certain MacOS X Installation Discs and Cyber , keep up the good job
