News on PearPC 0.4?

Post by robojam »

Does anyone know if there's any news on progress of PearPC 0.4 yet? There's not a lot on any sites that I have seen, I just wondered if anyone has anything they can post in this thread.

PearPC 0.Forever:lol:
It will be released once OpenBIOS is working, which might take a little while.

What exactly is Openbios? Any advantages?

Runs OS 9, 10.0 and some other non-bootable systems.

I see, while that's a rather cool feature, I can't help but to think:
"Why would we should crave for outdated OS's, while OS X (be it panther or Tiger) on x86 running on truely workable speed is the true holy grail IMO."
Will that new version of PearPC also include (major) speed improvement?
I found it very dissapointing that it ran slow on my newly bought AMD64 3500+ (s939/winchester) & 1 gb ram. Or could it be just my settings?
Could that be it? Should my specs allready make it fly (or at least workable) on the current 0.4pre build?

@wiebeest:

I think it's not only about run ning "outdated" OSes like OS9.x, but also about PPC Linux distros, which currently don't run with PearPC.
Many people should think of PearPC as what its original purpose is, i.e. being a PPC emulator, not primarily a Mac OS X virtual machine! Don't forget about this.
I'd indeed be very happy to be able to install Gentoo and other OSes upon PearPC and I think many others would be happy, too.

There are many developers who need to maintain linux/ppc downloads, but don't have a linux/ppc computer to build and test them on.

I think it will support OS 8.6, too. But if you want to run OS 8-9, why don't you just use SheepShaver?

JIT doesn't work right, and it won't boot correctly without it either sometimes.

yeah i agree sheepshaver ,well a least the win version ,is not really usable as it is ,as it lacks to much support ,unfortunatly what it as that pearpc does not have is speed.

I'm using the UNIX version (on linux), so it shouldn't be a problem...but it is.

PearPC (seems) stabler, and so I figured that if it's using 9.2 (less "heavy" perse compared to X) it should run faster.

Why would you need to run a PPC linux distro? There are a million x86 linux distros, and they run in an x86 emulator like QEMU. ANd the x86 version of linux has the most programs.
