hard drive .img not appearing in Mac install window

Post by tarose »

hi i have gotten pear pc running & attempting to install panther... but when the Mac OS install gets to the part where you select the 3 or 6 GB disk image, there is no image to select... i have followed all the instructions manually with both ppc v 0.3 & 0.4 & also with PearPC Control Panel, plus i read the forums so fairly sure i am doing it as per instructions... but each time it gets to the part where i need to select the hdd to install on, there is none there to select.

any idea what could be wrong?

Hi,

Did you start disk utility from the menu? You need to partition and format the image before it becomes available.

Ok, so as soon as the ISO boots and is loaded I go to Utilities and then Disk Utility and it stays on "Gathering Disk Info" and never returns.

So being unable to format the partion I am unable to continue the install in order to select the drive.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

This a known issue with some hard disk image files. Where did you disk image come from? Perhaps using the one from this site helps out:
http://www.emaculation.com/pearpc/macosx_6gb.rar

Otherwise try the one from the pearpc site:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/pear ... ib.img.bz2

And please remember you need to restart PearPC to let the installer see the disk. (but after you used disk utility successfully, of course)

Thanks for the prompt response.

I still get the same issue "Gathering Disk Information", at first I was using the pearpc 6gb image file, then I used your macosx 6gb image file, and I still get the same thing.

Any other ideas would greatly be appreciated.

Ok, I guess third time is a charm...I have downloaded the image files for a third time and using winrar have extracted. The disk image is finally viewable, I removed printer drivers for the installation, it finished prepping but failed at installation and am currently stuck there.

Any ideas on what I should install?

Hi

You can try to install as little as possible and make sure your host or OSX doesn't sleep while installing.
What OSX version are you installing? 10.3 or 10.4

OS X 10.4, but it seems that 3 seems to be a magical number. The third time into this the install completed and pearpc shutdown. I have since removed the install iso and the cd device from the cfg.

I closed pearpc and relaunched with the new settings and used the drive to boot from and it has been on the apple logo and the circle running for well over 2.5 hours.

How long does it normally take for the initial launch?

Dell 5150 Dual Core 2.8 4GB RAM

Thanks for all the help along the way.

Certainly not that long on your machine!

Are you running G3 emulation or G4? G3 is the most complete and less problematic. Also 10.3 runs with less problems then 10.4. (Your magic numbers again ;-)
