I have seen quite alot of people talking about this program called simics.
Could someone please tell me what this program does and what OS it runs on?

It's very good, I ues it to play with Alpha and SPARC a little bit. I'm reading some documentation on IA-64 too. They offer "craff" (disk) images of Linux pre-compiled and pre-installed, totaly ready to run.
Note that it's very unlikely that you will be able to run Mac OS in it, as it doesn't simulates all the hardware that Mac OS needs to run. But you can still run Linux on a simulated PPC machine (I already did this).
It's an comercial app, but if you are and college student you may get a free license for academic research, like I did.
