Spam 'phishing' email?

Post by TiddK »

I received an email from someone called "Sypymuss" (who I've never heard of). It read...

You have received a new private message from "Sypymuss" to your account on
"E-Maculation" with the following subject:

We are deleting inactive accounts! Confirm your account!

You can view your new message by clicking on the following link:

http://emaculation.com/forum/ucp.php?i= ... iew&p=7210

You have requested that you be notified on this event, remember that you
can always choose not to be notified of new messages by changing the
appropriate setting in your profile.

Thanks, E-Maculation

PS: Please don't reply to this e-mail address. No one reads it.

I pasted the link above in this forum and the message could not be found. Is this someone trying to get personal details from forum members?

Yes, this was a spam message.

We do not know how many members got messages like this. Yesterday we had a massive account creation attack and the new accounts were apparently configured to send PMs (personal messages) to our members. Cat_7 happened to witness the event while it was going on and he could stop the registration flood and delete the newly created accounts with the PMs they sent. That left only the email messages pointing to the removed PMs.
