SheepShaver not opening after using COI
Hi,
I have the same problem since a few days. I used SheepShaver for a long time (first SS, then COI and SS since a few years).
I am now in Catalina and downloaded SS for Catalina and it works fine since 3 months.
Since a few days, when I launched it, I have the same problem: il starts and then stops immediately. I downloaded the last version and same...
I created a new user and tries: same.
Any idea?

Re: SheepShaver not opening
(You should better have started a new topic. Your issue is clearly not the same one as the one that started this topic.)
I understand that SheepShaver worked for you in Catalina and that it stopped working a couple of days ago without you having made any changes. You tried if replacing the SheepShaver application with the latest build would solve the issue. Correct?
Something must have happened to your SheepShaver setup to make SheepShaver stop working. It is not something that can be solved by updating the SheepShaver application.
I looked back to older posts by you. There you continued to use the COI configuration, but with a newer SheepShaver version/build.
Have you changed that COI plus SheepShaver setup in any way?

Can you explain how to recreate a new SS from scratch? I will keep my Shared Folder with the 400MB, 800MB, ...
Many thanks.

Re: SheepShaver not opening
(I edited your post to make it readable.)
When you set up a regular SheepShaver configuration, I suppose you will also want to rescue your HD image file from COI.
First let us try to see what could have happened and which files you use.
Show me the configuration prefs file that COI will have saved while you still used it as such:
Launch Terminal (in /Application/Utilities/) and type at the prompt followed by a return.
The file will open in your default text editor. Select all content and copy and paste it here in your reply.

Re: SheepShaver not opening
I see that it makes reference to the old COI.
disk /Users/moi/Downloads/COIV4.0.1+/Classic 2.4.app/COI.app/.Classic.dmg
rom /Users/moi/Downloads/COIV4.0.1+/Classic 2.4.app/COI.app/.old.rom
keycodefile /Users/moi/Downloads/COIV4.0.1+/Classic 2.4.app/COI.app/.BasiliskII_keycodes
But, probably a few days ago, I trash this one. Is it the problem?
I have another Mac in Sierra where COI runs fine. Can I copy the files from COIV4.0.1+?

Re: SheepShaver not opening
YES!
I use Time Machine and see that on July 21 (birthday of my wife!!!), I trash the COI.
I restore it, OS9 starts, but quits...
I see COIV4.1.1+/Classic2.4/COI and I cannot get the contents of COI (no app).
no rom, no classic.DMG
An idea?

Re: SheepShaver not opening
Well, this is more or less what I expected. SheepShaver worked because it used the COI configuration and the referenced files inside.
Also, apparently you had COI installed in your Downloads folder. Unusual, although it works. The Downloads folder is for downloads. From there you move or install files or applications or whatever to where you need the software. You are not supposed to use software from the Downloads folder.
If you restore the COIV4.0.1+ folder (or is it a package) with its contents to the Downloads folder, SheepShaver should work again.
Do you know how to restore files or folders from the Time Machine backup using the "Activate Time Machine" feature? Do not try unless you know how to. If you don't know how to, I can tell you.

Re: SheepShaver not opening
I have been a computer scientist for 50 years. And Macintosh Apple developer since 1990. Thus I know that it is (often) best to use this folder for downloads. First time, I test SS from the Download folder. It worked fine, after many problems with the old SS or COI. Since this time, I used it at the same place, afraid it doesnt work more if I change its place... And as is not forbidden, I continue...
I dont' know what is the "Activate Time Machine" feature".
A few hours ago, I restored the folders with Time Machine, as usual. But it is perhaps not the good way?

Re: SheepShaver not opening
"Activate Time Machine" is the GUI method of retrieving files or folders from the backup. It shows a futuristic time travel experience through the opened Finder window.
If "COIV4.0.1+" is now back in the Downloads folder, SheepShaver should work again.
If it does not, you may have added another complication when you replaced SheepShaver itself. If you try to run it from the location where the archive was expanded, it will not run. Copy (not move) the application to a different location and try to launch it from there. (You can then trash the original download.)
With your COI+SheepShaver setup, the SheepShaver applcation can be run from any location, but it is essential that "COIV4.0.1+" is not moved or changed.

Re: SheepShaver not opening
OK, I often used this feature since the introduction of Leopard...You wrote:"Activate Time Machine" is the GUI method of retrieving files or folders from the backup. It shows a futuristic time travel experience through the opened Finder window.
Now, its a little better: Classic starts. I see the splash OS9-Welcome to MacOS but it quits immediately. You wrote: If "COIV4.0.1+" is now back in the Downloads folder, SheepShaver should work again.
I restored just the "COIV4.0.1+" folder. Nothing more. You wrote:If it does not, you may have added another complication when you replaced SheepShaver itself. Yes, I understand this, because of the contents of the SheepShaver prefs file. But wherever SheepShaver starts, the working is the same. You wrote:With your COI+SheepShaver setup, the SheepShaver applcation can be run from any location, but it is essential that "COIV4.0.1+" is not moved or changed.
I compare all the files with the other Mac and all seems to be identical.

Re: SheepShaver not opening
Yes, the configuration by COI will cause recent SheepShaver builds to crash.
The best would be to move your COI files to a regular setup. But with the forum shutdown for the upgrade next week, we better try a temporary solution for now.
You can edit the prefs file manually in TextEdit.
Again launch Terminal (in /Application/Utilities/) and type at the prompt followed by a return.
The file will open in your default text editor, usually TextEdit.
Find two identical lines that read:
In both lines change "false" to "true".
Close and save the changes.
Note: I will move this thread from this topic to a new topic in the "Other SheepShaver configurations" subforum later.

Re: SheepShaver not opening
Bravo! It works...
If you have a little moment, can you explain this false to true miracle?
I am waiting until next thread.
Many thanks to the illusionist...

Re: SheepShaver not opening
If I understand all, is is the final solution?
I create a folder in Applications called "Ronald". In this folder, I copy the "COIV4.0.1+" folder and rename it "COI" (for exemple). I copy also the SheepShaver application.
I edit the preference file and change the 3 lines:
disk /Users/moi/Applications/Ronald/COIV4.0.1+/Classic 2.4.app/COI.app/.Classic.dmg
rom /Users/moi/Applications/Ronald/COIV4.0.1+/Classic 2.4.app/COI.app/.old.rom
keycodefile /Users/moi/Applications/Ronalds/COIV4.0.1+/Classic 2.4.app/COI.app/.BasiliskII_keycodes
And also the true/false after your explanation.
Correct?

Re: SheepShaver not opening
Please do not do this. This is no final solution, it will only replace one crappy COI + SheepShaver setup with another one.
I will tell you later how to turn your setup into a regular SheepShaver setup.
Did you try editing the prefs file as I suggested?

Yes, I modified false to true and it works now.

It works now nice.
But, you said you will give me the final solution. You are welcome...

Diacritics in SheepShaver
Hi,
Since SS 2.4, diacritics (éèàç...) dont' work anymore in OS9.
When we choose french keyboard, it's QWERTY with diacritics. When we choose english keyboard it's AZERTY without diacritics
Very hard to use for french users... And it's new. Before SS2.4 all was fine.
An idea?

Re: Diacritics in SheepShaver
I suppose you mean SheepShaver 2.5, not SheepShaver 2.4.
Yes, you will need a different keycodes file with SheepShaver 2.5. You still use SheepShaver with COI, I will see how you could replace the keycodes file in COI.

Re: SheepShaver not opening after using COI
I moved the thread about diacritics into this topic as it still about your temporary setup.
Here is another temporary solution to solve this issue:
Download this "keycodes" file: http://ronaldpr.home.xs4all.nl/sheepsha ... ycodes.zip
Unzip it (if not already done automatically)
Place the file near your SheepShaver app.
Start SheepShaver
Open preferences in the SheepShaver menu (in the Catalina menu bar)
Go to the Miscellaneous tab
There you see a checked box 'Use Raw Keycodes' and after it a box with the path to the selected file inside COI
Use the "Browse" button and in the resulting Open dialog find and open the newly installed keycodes file.
The new path will appear in the box.
Click Save and Quit and shut down the emulated machine.
Do not make any other changes in preferences yet.
After next launch of SheepShaver you will be able to correctly use your AZERTY keyboard.
