Trying to get MacOS 922 Word's speaking to play on QEMU4Win7
The very same MacinTalk mod used for a little cartoon from the early 2000's called "Whatever Happened To... Robot Jones?"
It's about a robot who grows up to slaughter humanity.
The show is.... flawed to put it lightly. It has good concepts but they're all jumbled and flow awkwardly.
Anyways, there's several roadstops.
(Attatching sound device through console)
(qemu-screamer-vga)
QEMU only plays a tiny quarter-second of audio. Usually ends up hanging (Notably the Word "Speak Selection", which hangs on the first word and lets the waverform animate).
qemu.bat file text
Screamer: qemu-system-ppc-screamer.exe -bios openbios-qemu-screamer.elf -L pc-bios -boot c -m 256 -M mac99 -prom-env "auto-boot?=true" -drive "file=Mac OS 9.2.2 for QEMU.dsk,format=raw,media=disk"
-device usb-mouse -device usb-kbd -sdl -prom-env "vga-ndrv?=true"
Newest: qemu-system-ppc.exe -L "I:\qemu\neu\pc-bios" -bios openbios-ppc -boot c -m 256 -M mac99 -prom-env "auto-boot?=true" -prom-env "boot-args=-v" -prom-env "vga-ndrv?=true" -drive "file=Mac OS 9.2.2 for QEMU.dsk,format=raw,media=disk" -device usb-mouse -device usb-kbd -sdl

Re: Trying to get MacOS 922 Word's speaking to play on QEMU4
Hi,
Which game is that?
With the latest screamer build, you do not need to set -bios as the correct bios is already in the pc-bios folder.
I just tested the speech application control panel and it "speaks" without issues.

Re: Trying to get MacOS 922 Word's speaking to play on QEMU4
It's not really a game, it's Microsoft's official "port" of Microsoft Word to Macintosh 9.2.2 from '98 (Available at the bottom of https://winworldpc.com/product/microsoft-office/97-98 with a key of 465-6389583 , not sure if this counts as bannable since we do have a link to Doom for Mac)
The CD is loadable with console command "change ide1-cd0 I:\Mackreal\Microsoft Office 98.iso," while the MacInTalk mod Word uses is hidden in the Value Pack under "Word Speak"
May I see your "qemu.bat" contents?
And what do you mean by "it "speaks" without issues?"
Also, didn't have the most recent version, though it still hangs on Word's "Word Speak," Simpletext's "Speak Selection" (It won't even bother attempting "Speak All")
Audio doesn't seem to be playing, though Realtek recognizes that QEMU can play sounds.

Re: Trying to get MacOS 922 Word's speaking to play on QEMU4
This is with the latest experimental build of december 24th

qemu-system-ppc-screamer.exe -L pc-bios -boot c -m 256 -M mac99 -drive file=c:\Mac-disks\9.2.img,format=raw,media=disk -prom-env "auto-boot?=true" -net nic,model=sungem -net user -sdl -prom-env "boot-args=-v" -prom-env "vga-ndrv?=true" -device usb-mouse -device usb-kbd
I meant, that all system text is spoken correctly, using the speech control panel.
From the macintoshrepository description of macintalk I understand macintalk is actually part of system 9 (and earlier).

Changed to the new version inbetween posting the first reply and when you got there, made an edit saying I did afterward.
Got a new problem (copied and pasted your QEMU.bat contents, switched the drive to the one I had)

Re: Trying to get MacOS 922 Word's speaking to play on QEMU4
Disable the Apple Audio Extension; you don't need it. You can do this at boot by holding down the space bar until the extension manager pops up.
Re: Trying to get MacOS 922 Word's speaking to play on QEMU4
Disabled it, now I'm at an odd in-between of the above where Word's "Speak Selection" hangs, Simpletext lags at the start of playing a voice and then doesnt' do anything, and attempting to turn on "Speakable Items" freezes the computer.
Worth noting that the "play sounds" in the sound manager is also "muted."
Also, what "Speech" program? The speech program in the control panel is for voice recognition, not MacInTalk

Re: Trying to get MacOS 922 Word's speaking to play on QEMU4
Hi,
I just installed Office 98 on Mac OS 9.22, including the value pack option and all text I select in Word is spoken perfectly.
I never had to disable the apple audio extension.
But it seems you don't have sound at all? Can you plays the system sounds? I play audio through a usb headset, I never tried audio through the sound card embedded on my motherboard.
Best,

Try that and see what happens.
Also what USB Headphones, and how did you connect them to QEMU/Macintosh8?

Re: Trying to get MacOS 922 Word's speaking to play on QEMU4
I have a simple logitech USB headset set as default audio device in Windows.
There is no need to set anything in the command line, qemu uses the default windows device.

Re: Trying to get MacOS 922 Word's speaking to play on QEMU4
So, how goes the "audio through the sound card embedded on [your] motherboard" attempt?
Re: Trying to get MacOS 922 Word's speaking to play on QEMU4
The onboard realtek device also produces perfect audio.

Re: Trying to get MacOS 922 Word's speaking to play on QEMU4
Moved to a different PC (Win8 Laptop), same problems.
Apple Audio Extension also crashed on startup, though second time (after unlaunched QEMU.bat with admin privileges) it didn't show any error messages or crashes, just audio not playing again.
May I ask, is this usual for using the newest build with the .dsk file from https://www.macintoshrepository.org/964 ... c-os-9-2-2 here (12-15 build)?

Hi,
Those builds do not support sound. Only our experimental builds do.

Re: Trying to get MacOS 922 Word's speaking to play on QEMU4
I know that, I mean using the .dsk from Macintosh-Repository's 12-15 "all-in-one" package.
Re: Trying to get MacOS 922 Word's speaking to play on QEMU4
That is a bit difficult to say. We do not provide the disk image. The image you shared above shows a perfectly normal start of qemu with Mac OS.
It seems, however, that some people have issues with the apple audio extension. But it is not required for sound.

Re: Trying to get MacOS 922 Word's speaking to play on QEMU4
I see. Do you know of anything similar happening with bad .dsk dumps?
Re: Trying to get MacOS 922 Word's speaking to play on QEMU4
I just tried that disk image, and it doesn't provide sound with our screamer build. I guess the best way to have sound is to install a clean Mac OS while using the screamer build.
Please note that sound supports requires both a qemu build that supports it, and an accompanying openbios-ppc file in the pc-bios folder that supports it. Any mixing of build and openbios files can be problematic.

Glad to know I haven't screwed up anything forever with this.
Any good tutorials on installing Mac 9.2.2 from an .iso file?

The best !

But of course you do not use the build from the official source, but the screamer build I linked to earlier.

Re: Trying to get MacOS 922 Word's speaking to play on QEMU4
What does PPC mean? Is that a specific version (using the 2002 version from Macintosh Repository)?
Re: Trying to get MacOS 922 Word's speaking to play on QEMU4
PPC? PowerPC, the name of the processor architecture Mac OS uses, in contrast to the Intel/AMD processors Windows uses.
Re: Trying to get MacOS 922 Word's speaking to play on QEMU4
Do I keep the hard-drive disk images in the .bz2 files?
Tried extracting with 7-zip, came out as "the parameter is incorrect" (file ends in ".img_")

Re: Trying to get MacOS 922 Word's speaking to play on QEMU4
.bz2 is an archive format, like .zip. If 7zip is reporting errors when extracting, try using WIndows' native extractor; Explorer can extract Bzip-2 archives natively. If that also doesn't work, you've got a corrupted archive.
Re: Trying to get MacOS 922 Word's speaking to play on QEMU4
Installed Mac 9.2.2 correctly, anything special afterwards I need to do besides install Macintalk and Microsoft Word 98?
EDIT: Got it working, is there a way to hit this key? https://vgy.me/UDvpvK.png
