Hi,

What has changed since you start getting these crashes? When does Mac OS crash? Can you boot to the desktop? Does it crash using a specific application?

Can you post the content of your .basilisk_ii_prefs file ?
(open applications/utilities/terminal and type "open .basilisk_ii_prefs" and copy the content of the file in your reply)

Best,

Nothing really has changed that might be causing these crashes, except I installed Minecraft.

I can boot it from anywhere (including my desktop), but the emulated Mac OS crashes immediately on boot with the Sad Mac screen for 3 seconds before closing.

BTW, I'm on OS X Lion (10.7.2)

Hi,

A sad mac can mean something is wrong with the disk image on which you installed Mac OS.

Did you install by using our setup guide? Do you still have the Mac OS 8 boot floppy image? If not, please download the Mac OS 8 startup floppy disk image from the guide here:
http://www.emaculation.com/doku.php/bas ... _osx_setup

Are you using the BasiliskII version for Snow Leopard/Lion mentioned there?

Open the Basilisk II GUI and add the floppy disk image to the volumes list (at the top). Start Basilisk (it should start from the floppy disk image. (If you don't have the GUI, please download it first from https://github.com/vasi/b2gui/downloads ).

Please report back whether the disk with your Mac OS 7.5.3 install is also visible on the desktop.

Oops! I see that Cat_7 already posted his answer while I was writing mine. But as my answer is more elaborate, I will post it anyway.
hayhay7789 wrote:with the Sad Mac screen for 3 seconds before closing.
That is suggestive for a serious problem on the MacOS753 disk that makes it unusable as startup disk.

You could add the DiskTools_MacOS8.image to the volumes list (preferably as the first volume with MacOS753 as the second volume). BasiliskII will then startup from the DiskTools_MacOS8.image which will appear as "Disk Tools 1" on the desktop. If the 753 disk is also mounted, you can try and repair it with Disk First Aid that is available on the Disk Tools 1 disk.

You probably already used DiskTools_MacOS8.image when you set up BasiliskII, you can download it here: http://www.open.ou.nl/hsp/downloads/Dis ... .image.zip

Not related to your problem, but on your machine with 10.7.2 (Lion) it is better to use the new 64-bit BasiliskII and BasiliskIIGUI that vasi created for OSX 10.6. and 10.7. See the sticky topic in this forum: http://www.emaculation.com/forum/viewto ... f=6&t=7361

And with those versions adjust some of your settings in the GUI:

- Set MacOS RAM size to at least 256MB
- Enable all options for the JIT Compiler and set Translation Cache size to 8192 KB

(The new GUI can save settings without starting BasiliskII.)

I put DiskTools_MacOS8.image on Basilisk II as my first volume and I still have my problem.
And, yes, I am following the Mac guide on this site, so I have the OS 10.6 and 10.7 app.

Any other ideas?

You can try several things:

-Use the GUI to remove your Mac 753 disk from the volumes list (and keep only the Mac OS 8 disk tools image in it) to see whether the problem is actually with the disk image. (This will not delete the disk image from your OSX disc, so you can add again it later)

-Open a terminal and type: "rm .basilisk_ii_xpram". This clears the local parameter file. It will be recreated during Basilisk startup.

-Try to remove your settings file. In terminal type: "rm .basilisk_ii_prefs". You will then need to use the GUI to make your settings again.

-Download a fresh copy of the ROM file you're using.

According to the cash log you are not using the latest BasiliskII application for 10.6 and 10.7. I see that the guide indeed still refers to the 04-10-2009 build. I will adjust the link in the guide to link to the sticky topic in this forum.

New issue: When I boot up 7.3 I get a message saying:

Not enough memory is available while using

To temporarily turn off extensions, restart and hold down the shift key.

Is there a fix for this?

Can you explain for us and other readers what fixed your problem?

For the other issue: please try to increase the amount of memory you give Basilisk in the GUI to e.g. 256 Mb.

What fixed my problem was resetting the Basilisk II parameter file. To do this, open Terminal and type: "rm .basilisk_ii_xpram".

I have the same problem too, when I try to open Basilisk II I get the message "Not enough memory is available while using." What is the "terminal" that I am supposed to open? This happened when I downloaded a new game and it was warning me about memory so I messed around with memory settings and now Basilisk won't open.
My "basiliskiigui" does not work because it says it "can't run on my pc", of course the app claims to have 0KB for size so something might be wrong with it. I downloaded a new file of "BasiliskIIGUI.app" from https://github.com/vasi/b2gui/downloads. Do I just add the folder to my Basilisk II folder? What do I do with it?

Are you using macOS? Terminal.app is how you interact with the Unix environment on macOS. It's in the Utilities folder. BasiliskIIGUI is designed for macOS, but Vasi's version is designed for Mojave and earlier, and will not run on Catalina. There's no real reason to run it though, as the BasiliskII.app has its own built-in GUI. BasiliskIIGUI.exe is needed for the Windows build which doesn't have a built-in GUI to configure things.

@ adespoton
It is SheepShaver for OSX/macOS that has its GUI built-in, not BasiliskII for OSX/macOS.

@ starfiretbt
Please first give us this essential information:
- Which is your host OSX/macOS system?
- Why did you choose this specific BasiliskII build and not one of builds that are recommended in this forum?
- Did you have BasiliskII with System 7.5.3 running fine before this problem occurred?

1. I don't know what a host OSX/macOS is? I am using basilisk II will this information work? It's from the file "BasiliskII_prefs"

2. I made my BasiliskII build using the instructions from https://emaculation.com/doku.php/basilisk_ii_setup. I did alter it a little from suggestions because somebody said it would improve a game. What is the recommended build?
3. And yes, my BasiliskII was working great until I started editing memory options in my mac control panel. I thought I was improving memory for my computer. Should I save a copy of my hard drives before I do any editing in the future? Also is there a way to get my GUI back?

"Host" refers to the operating system your computer runs. In this case, you're likely using Windows 10. Anything in these forums that references OS X or macOS will NOT work on Windows 10. .app files are essentially .exe files for the Macintosh operating system.

Based on the fact that you were referencing the Mac binaries when asking for help, people were providing you with the guidance needed to get things working on a Macintosh computer. Since you're actually using Windows, you'll need to use BasiliskIIGUI.exe to configure your setup.

Yes I am running windows 10. How do I get the BasiliskIIGUI.exe? I used to have it, but now when I try to open it it says "This app can't run on your pc." It also says it's size is 0KB. Is it possible to get a new one?
I downloaded and set up my BasiliskII on my old computer which was window's 7 and transferred the files to my current computer years ago, is that why my BasiliskIIGUI.exe doesn't work? I thought everything worked when I got my current computer and moved the files.

You're getting confused between the Windows downloads and the Mac downloads. The one from Vasi is for Macs, not for Windows. Go to the Windows downloads section of this site, and download the Windows version.

Okay, that worked. I just downloaded the basiliskII file from the https://www.emaculation.com/doku.php/basilisk_ii_setup and reset up my basiliskII. I think when I moved computers I forgot to install that gtk runtime thing or something got missing. It's running fine now. I also downloaded the latest version of basilisk (30-04-2020) and added the files to my basiliskII folder.
I wish I could help you guys with the work you do. Is there a donation page to contribute to the support I get from you guys through this forum? And also is there a site that details all the things the BasiliskGui does, for example the memory tab has an option for MacOS RAM size (MB). Does that give me more memory? Where can I learn more about Basilisk?

You realize that having now posted here, you're part of "you guys" right? Basilisk II doesn't really have an active developer, although Kanjitalk755 does his bit when he can. We're all just people who talk about Mac emulators on a forum :) Some of us have some knowledge of hardware internals and/or coding skills; we help out where we can.

Assigning more memory is essentially sticking more RAM in your virtual 68k Mac. There are limits, as discussed in this forum; they depend on the OS version you're running as well as which ROM you're using.
