System 7.5.3 checksum error solution

Post by xot »

As others have reported in these forums, I was having difficulty installing System 7.5.3 following the guide posted here.

The installation disk(s) would not mount within the emulated Mac and the disk verification test which followed would fail with a checksum error. Each time, the computed checksum value was different, which to my programmer's mind indicates a major problem with the emulator, not the disk images.

After trying many options within BasiliskIIGUI.exe, and being nudged by a suggestion to use an older pre-JIT version of Basilisk, I found that disabling the JIT compiler allowed the installation disk(s) to be mounted and the OS installation to proceed normally.

Further investigation showed that the JIT compiler could be enabled but the installation would only work if "Translate through constant jumps (inline block)" was disabled.

I have not used the emulator enough to determine if there are any other strange problems related to these settings.

I am running 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 on AMD64 processors.

Hi,

Thanks for reporting. This is a recurring issue, but this time I updated the installation guide accordingly. To my knowledge (and as reported by others) the issue only occurs during installation, so the setting can be reversed afterwards.

Basilisk for Windows is getting a bit rough around the edges, due to lack of maintenance.

Best,
