It works great! But one question regarding Stuffit etc.

So I installed Basilisk II on my MacBook Pro (from 2008, with Snow Leopard) and so far it works great!
Thanks to everyone who was involved in creating and supporting this emulator!

Back in the late 90s I wrote some PalmOS application, using Metrowerks Code Warrior
on a Powerbook with 68040 processor.
I later transferred the Metrowerks software and the project to an iBook G4,
where I could use it in the Mac OS 9 environment.
And now I was able to install it in Basilisk II and Mac OS 7.5 and it works.
It's incredible. That way I can still compile my old Palm app on my modern computer
(and then use it with a Palm emulator, on my Android phone  ).

One question: How should I make backup copies of my Metrowerks Palm project?
My idea was to create a .sit archive in OS 7.5 and then copy it to the "unix" disk
and save it on an external disk, memory card, or whatever.
But it seems that Stuffit / DropStuff is shareware? The versions I found have a trial period of 15 days.
Yes, it's possible to circumvent the trial period by going back to an earlier copy of the harddisk image
and reinstall it. But is there an easier way?
Is there a free version of an old Stuffit or some other archive software that I could use?

Thanks

SIT sure is a good one.
As you are on OS X it should be enough to create a DiskCopy image of you projects folder(s),
move it to the Unix shared folder and compress it on the host OS (if you wish to)
I´m keeping all my backups from defunct Macs as IMGs stored on external USB drives.

There's an even easier way: have a Projects disk image that you mount in BII -- make it a SparseImage bundle. Then use Time Machine in OS X, and it will automatically back up any modifications to the sparse image, without having to make complete copies of the image each time you change something. Then you can roll the entire image back to whatever state you want, launch BII, and Bingo! All files are in a concurrent state.

I would just create a separate .hfv disk image, copy the files to the .hfv image, and then backup the .hfv image. Or just backup the entire image on which you installed OS 7.5, much like Adespoton suggests.

I don't think there was ever a "free" version of Stuffit. (Stuffit Lite comes to mind, but that was shareware too.) Compact Pro was another popular alternative, but it was also shareware.

There are Macintosh flavors of Zip compression (MacZip and Zip-It, namely), but you have to be careful with those since they're non-native formats – for instance, a file might end up with a MacBinary header before getting zipped and then be unrecognizable to a PC application after being unzipped on a PC. It's probably best to avoid those.

Yes, Stuffit Lite is shareware, but it carries no expiration date (merely complains); it lacks some of the features of Deluxe, handles only older archives (I have version 3.6) but works well otherwise… For some reason, it breaks some builds of Mini vMac, though.

Didn’t a System Software CD contain the StuffIt Engine, allowing DropStuff/Expander to work fully? OS 7.6?

Yeah; I bought Stuffit Lite 1.5 back in the day... and then Stuffit Lite 2 came out and had a different license. And then the product ceased to exist when they went to the new archive format, and was replaced by DropStuff/EE.

I think getting a license for any of those early versions would be a bit tricky now. Easier to use the zip tool posted somewhere on these forums that's OS X/Windows compatible.

And yes, 7.6 contained a hobbled version of the Stuffit Engine; it wouldn't run Deluxe, but worked fine with DropStuff and Expander (not the EE portion IIRC).
