Pce/macplus for windows and hfs drive initialization

Post by rjolbrich »

Hello,
I'm new to mac emulation. I've managed to get two emulators to boot -
Pce/macplus for Windows and Mac os 6 and a Qemu based emulator for
Windows and Mac os 9.2. I'd like to download files in os 9.2, place them
on a hsf formatted disk (and image file) and import the disk through the
pce/macplus setup. Is there a way to import the non-empty disk image
into pce/macplus without the need to initialize and erase the disk's contents
once I boot into OS 6?
I received a funky error on my first attempt.
Thanks

Where did you create the disk image? If you have created/formatted it in Mac OS 9, the volume’s drivers might be too new for System 6 to properly read from/write to it. You might try formatting it in System 6 and see whether it can still be properly handled there after writing files to it in Mac OS 9.

I’ve never used Pce/macplus though, so I don’t know whether you have to take into account any other obstacles related to that software.

Pce/macplus does proper hardware/device emulation, so you're probably correct. Format a blank image in System 6, then mount it in a later OS or HVFExplorer to copy files in.

Hello again,
My limited knowledge of Qemu and classic Mac OS is about to show!
I had pce/macplus boot with an empty HFS image which I then initialized.
The drive appeared on my desktop. I exited the emulator, copied the disk image
to my Qemu folder, and booted OS 9.2 emulator. The drive did not appear on the desktop.
Again, I initialized and it appeared on the desktop.

Should I not try to avoid this second initialization? Won't that cause problems when
I try to reboot OS 6 by forcing another initialization? I guess I'm not quite clear
about what "mounting" a drive image means! Do all non-empty drive images have to be
"mounted" and "initialized"? Is there an option that I need to add to the startup of Qemu?
The Qemu batch startup file includes " -drive filename.img, format=raw, media=disk "

Sorry for my limited knowledge of the basics of the Mac OS initialization of disks and images!

Some extra info,

I notice that within pce/macplus the disk appears as a SCSI device. When I invoke Qemu
for OS 9.2 do I have to configure a SCSI device? At present I am not, and the documentation
for Qemu does suggest options for SCSI. Can anyone explain how to do that in Qemu?
