Mini vMac - App bombs immediately with illegal instruction
Hello,
I'm new to Mini vMac on Windows 10. I downloaded an app from Macintoshrepository
and used ImportFl to transfer it into Mini vMac. Starting the app yielded the system
bomb/error stating illegal instruction. Are occasional flawed apps posted on the
repositories? The listing warned the download was the app only and no support folders
were included!

Hard to tell what went wrong, without further details.
Wich is the app you are trying to run?

Re: Mini vMac - App bombs immediately with illegal instructi
Also, what operating system were you running in Mini vMac?
Re: Mini vMac - App bombs immediately with illegal instructi
StrataVision 3D 1.4.1 on Mac OS 6
Re: Mini vMac - App bombs immediately with illegal instructi
The DL from Macintoshgarden is the naked file only.
I did add a NDIF image with the app as second DL.
Strata does work on my side (Mojave) with MiniVMac II, Basilisk II and SheepShaver.
MacOS was System 6.0.8 to 8.6.
The default MiniVMac.app does not run Strata due to the missing FPU.
If you happen to have models or texture files for Strata 1.4 please kindly add them to the page at Macintoshgarden.

Re: Mini vMac - App bombs immediately with illegal instructi
Thanks for reminding me about the FPU.
I downloaded the Mac II variation for 64bit Windows and installed it.
StrataVision 3D installed successfully. I started the app successfully and was
warned that I needed 32-bit Quickdraw for a full app. The UI seemed to function, but
I was confused with some of the basic features. I have to find a manual.
I'll see just how well the FPU emulation works/fails.
The added bonus of color makes this variation a nice addition.

Re: Mini vMac - App bombs immediately with illegal instructi
I would not know where to start either with Strata. No manual, no models...
32bit Quickdraw was needed for the early colour capable Macs, like the Mac II.
I think it was on a separate floppy for installation.
If you want to stick with System 6, feel free to look here: https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/minivmac-230-android
The 3. DL contains Windows apps - outdated 32 bit ones - but they should work never the less with W7 or W10.
Sytem6.img has Quickdraw in the System Folder.

Re: Mini vMac - App bombs immediately with illegal instructi
Mode32 is the extension required. However, I seem to recall that extension causing at least some versions of Mini vMac to lock up when loading on boot.
Re: Mini vMac - App bombs immediately with illegal instructi
24bit,
The Windows Mini vMac II zip file is activating warnings from my version of Norton
after a download. Norton is automatically deleting the unzipped files! Has Mini vMac
ever had virus problems, or does my 64-bit (?) Norton have trouble with 32-bit apps?

Re: Mini vMac - App bombs immediately with illegal instructi
It's probably a false positive on one of the files in the zip. Does Norton supply you with the file hash of the file it's detecting?
Re: Mini vMac - App bombs immediately with illegal instructi
Norton IDs it as WS.Reputation.1. Their docs suggest a false positive due
to a lack of reputation. The files are too new. I'm going to override Norton
and use them anyway. All three executables triggered Norton.

Re: Mini vMac - App bombs immediately with illegal instructi
I've got Mini vMac II installed! I see quite a few extras.
However, I don't see much about it online!? Is there any documentation available?

Re: Mini vMac - App bombs immediately with illegal instructi
I think that Paul C.Pratt has a good documentation on his site.
As for the outdated versions prior to 3.6 there is something here (3.DL):
https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/mac-sy ... ment-63126
When you are reading through the "Build_MiniVMac.pdf" you will get the idea what was possible.
If you have a XP (virtual) machine around, you may build MiniVMac with Visual Studio 2005 yourself fairly easy for Windows.
Visual Studio 2005 is hosted at the Internet Archive: https://archive.org/details/MicrosoftVi ... 5X11-45582

Re: Mini vMac - App bombs immediately with illegal instructi
???????
I see the docs for Mini vMac but not for Mini vMac II!
I'm confused about the history of Mini vMac II.

Re: Mini vMac - App bombs immediately with illegal instructi
Mini vMac is the overarching product; it's designed so that instead of having one app with a settings panel, you compile the version of the app with the settings you want. The version of Mini vMac that emulates a Mac II-series computer is commonly referred to as "Mini vMac II". The default app, normally called "Mini vMac" emulates a Mac Plus. You can also compile it to emulate a Mac 128K, Mac 512ke, Mac SE, Mac SE FDHD, and Mac Classic.
The II is the only one that emulates an MC68020 computer with color graphics.
There are many many many other options that you can set at compile time. There's virtually no options you can set via the control interface once you've compiled. Details available here:
https://www.gryphel.com/c/minivmac/var_serv.html
Standard documentation available here:

Re: Mini vMac - App bombs immediately with illegal instructi
Thank you,
One question. What is the difference between the Mini vMac Mac II "variation"
that I downloaded from the gryphel site and the Mini vMac II from the Garden
that 24bit referenced?

Re: Mini vMac - App bombs immediately with illegal instructi
The MiniVMac II apps from Macintoshgarden are outdated 32bit apps for reference.
There is no support for the builds, they are an example for the old build helper output,
which was available on Paul C. Pratt´s pages before he switched to MiniVMac 3.6.
The apps run with 8-16-24 bit colour, as the name indicates, with a somewhat larger screen.
