It's not a hack. It's accurate emulation of a unique design feature of the Macintosh Classic.
Mini vMac is the only Macintosh emulator able to do this. That's why it requires the full 512K ROM image, whereas other emulators do not.

Yes, that's right. The Macintosh Classic is the only Macintosh with a boot disk in ROM (a cut-down version of System 6.0.3, as you will have seen).

SoftMac throws a Sad Mac when I use a full and a strange 136k ROM. The 256k ROM works.
