Why can't i hear my cd playing?

Post by macmax »

How come in mac os 7.5.3 when i try to play a cd i can't hear any sound? by default the cd player is set to no volume, but when i try to turn up the volume the volume snaps down again. even when i hold the volume level up i still don't hear any sound. But I can still hear volume sounds. What's going on? :?:

Try turning up the volume in the windows mixer for "CD Player".

Depending on the Mac OS you are running, choose either the Sound or Monitors & Sound control panel, then set the Sound Input to Internal CD.

I hope you can get it working.

The Mac OS 7.5.3 Sound control panel has a drop-down box with various selections. See screenshot link below:

I also have to ask ... have you copied the cdenable.sys file into your Windows\System32\Drivers directory?

One of them should. It's just called differently on each sound card.

i know about the sound control panel that is where i looked first. yes i do have the cdenable.sys in my drivers folder. I have a sound blaster live ! value card. I can do everything except play cd's. the sound even works in SimCity 2000! Do you guys know of any good mp3 players for System 7.5.5? I tried to play some mp3's on my pc hard drive ,but that didn't work cause it's mp3 format.

Here is a question: Do you have the proper Cable hooked inside your CD-ROM for analog audio? Older Mac OS systems do not use digital audio and require a standard cd-rom audio cable be hooked up to the drive.

Digital audio extracts audio digitally as if the audio cd were a disc containing binary data, whereas analog cd playing is done using a drive's internal cpu and sent via the analog sound cable. Macs used analog because it used hardly any cpu time making it faster.

i didn't know that!

i had no clue about that! that's rather interesting. no i don't think don't think that i have the cable hooked up in my dvd/cdrw drive. i only use it to play games and copy music with windows media player. digitally of course(what isn't these days!). thanks again. no os 8 though. i found out it's not exactly free. so i use 7.5.5.
