Over the past thirty days, these have been the popular browsers to this website:

Among Windows users (57% of site visitors):

Firefox: 51% of all visitors
IE: 34% of all visitors
Chrome: 7% of all visitors
Opera: 5% of all visitors
Safari: 4% of all visitors
Seamonkey: 1% of all visitors

Among Mac users (35% of site visitors):

Safari: 66%
Firefox 30%
Camino: 2%
Mozilla: .5%

Chrome is quickly becoming popular. Will Google stop giving money to Firefox in an attempt to grab an even bigger share of the market?

Among Windows users of this website:

August: Firefox 50.4%, IE 33.4%, Chrome 7.2%
September: Firefox 48.9%, IE 34.2%, Chrome 7.8%

Chrome is really grabbing some market-share, at least among tech-savvy users like you guys...

Through the first half of October, Chrome has been used by 8.8% of Windows users who visit this site.

Are you sure it's Chrome, or maybe derivatives like SRWare Iron and Chrome Plus?

The tracking is from Google Analytics. I'll have to check around to see tha accuracy of Google's tracking.

Maybe they would be happy to inflate Chrome's user share a little bit.

Anyhow: what are these derivatives? I've never heard of either of them...

Essentially, they are the Google Chrome equivalents to derivatives of Mozilla Firefox (like Flock, K-Meleon, etc.) Their main advantage is that they tend to have more up-to-date features compared to Chrome (like having the latest version of WebKit), have more built-in features compared to Chrome (mouse gestures, ad-block, etc.), while removing all the malicious features Chrome has.

I like the look of those. Chrome is a very nice browser. I upgraded to FireFox 3 with much annoyance... the bloat is getting out of control.

Interesting to see the browser stats.

Here, I am still using Opera on Windows. But I have Classilla on my Lombard and am really liking it.

As this is a Mac site you may have missed it, but there was an interesting blog post on the PC Pro website about their site's browser statistics. He was asking why some people had visited the site on an Amiga. And plenty of people where asking why Windows 95 was so high up on the list.

I just checked the stats for the extremely popular stevecoates.net website and found that Internet Explorer and Firefox are the two most popular browsers used to visit my site. Opera comes third, which means that other people must visit the site more than I do.

This month the site has received five hits from ClockWise's Kegs page and about 80 hits from Google Images.

The search keywords is always interesting. It seems alot of people have found my site by looking for information on Avo Meters and Trinitron monitors which is something my site has pages about. But someone came there by searching for 'stephen coates geography'. I searched for that on google, and the first result is an RTF file containing my CV. I'm surprised google indexed that. I only put it there to show to some people in an IRC channel. I'm not sure whether it being there is a good thing or not

Maybe I am the only active registered member here who use Seamonkey as default browser on Windows.
Seamonkey is the only real direct descendant of Netscape Communicator and is still being actively developed.

And still with all its features: Browser, Composer, Mail, NewsGroups, ChatZilla IRC client.

I always update to the latest version (MacOSX), but I hardly use it anymore. The Composer can be useful for simple editing of existing web pages, but it has the nasty habit of changing source formatting.

You may want to try Kompozer instead. It's an updated, standalone composer derived from the Mozilla composer.

And plenty of people where asking why Windows 95 was so high up on the list.

Because it was the last version of Windows that wasn't bloated (other than NT4).

Thanks. I tried Kompozer on an existing XHTML 1.0 Transitional page that passes W3C markup validation fine, but Kompozer clearly shows where it comes from:

It has the same annoying habit as Composer in SeaMonkey of changing source formatting (hard-wrapping text), even when "Retain original source formatting" is selected in preferences.

It also adds by itself returns (<br /> tags) when I do nothing but adding some text to an existing paragraph without ever touching the enter or return key.

And it changed by itself coding in a list (with CSS showing as a menu) from

into

Code: Select all

thus completely destroying the appearance of the whole page.

It would be nice to have a simple WYSIWYG editor that respects existing code.

see? there are more Windows 'participants' and visitors to this site than there are from the Linux arena..... so maybe that would mean that there really should be more focus on developing emulators for the Windows side? (wink-wink, nudge-nudge)

You know, it wasn't until about two months ago when there was a large increase in traffic that the number of Macintosh visitors finally overtook the number of Windows users. Now, finally, this is a Macintosh site.

When the site started it was probably about 95% Windows. Now just 45%!

Well, at least IE is continue to drop in popularity, but I don't think switching to Google Chrome is the way to go. At least they should use SRWare Iron or ChromePlus.

Well, I imagine that most of the time those Chrome variants show up as Chrome. Do any traffic monitoring thingies have the ability to tell the difference?

Perhaps a unique browser ID. Then again, Mozilla IDs tend to be very similar, so perhaps not.
