.hqx file?

Post by DirkM »

I'm trying to run Boxcars Casino (http://macintoshgarden.org/games/boxcars-casino) on Basilisk II, but I can't seem to open the .hqx file. I've tried opening it with Stuffit, but all that happens is that a window pops up for a split second and then disappears (from what I can see of it, it says "Scanning. Items remaining: 1"). What am I doing wrong?

For HQX or SIT a matching version of Stuffit Expander is needed to inflate the file on a Mac.
To save you some hassle, I added a second DL to the page above.
Feel free to try the zipped image. Expand on your host and add the img to the Basilisk II volumes.

For Stuffit best look here:http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/stuffit-expander-55 (3. DL)
Stuffit Expander 5.5 wants MacOS 7.5 though.

Thanks! Unfortunately, the new download doesn't seem to be working for me either.

I unzipped the file on a Windows machine (could this have been the problem?), and the resultant file was called "Boxcars Casino ƒ.img." HFVExplorer wouldn't let me copy this file over, though it allowed it when I renamed the file simply to "Boxcars.img."

When I tried opening this file via Disk Copy, I received the following error message: "The Mount Image operation did not complete (-8816). The file "Boxcars.img" does not have a recognized file type."

For the record, I'm running MacOS 7.5.5, along with Stuffit Expander 5.5.

Hm, maybe my bad. I used OSX to create the ZIP and the image had a special character.
I replaced the file at Macintoshgarden. Expand with 7-Zip or similar on a PC and you should get a dot something folder which is useless, plus the Box_cars_Casino.img.
Please add the img to your Basilisk volumes list and restart Basilisk II.
Thats all - I hope. ;)

The game is working on my side with Basilisk II and MiniVMac II.

My pleasure. ;)
The Boxcars Casino games are looking pretty cute to me, especially thinking of their age.
Best try with MiniVMac II too - slower, but more like the original gaming, I presume.
In Basilisk II assign more RAM to Boxcars to try preventing crashes e.g. 4800k.

For extracting Mac ZIP, I have to correct myself:
The folder you get is named _MACOSX with a file ._Box_cars_Casino.img in it.
Please delete these usually hidden files, as they are useless for you.

How might I do that? I did find that the program crashes when trying to enter the Poker games.

On the Mac, click an app once and select "Get Info" from the File menu.
A small window pops up, where RAM settings may be changed.
Edit Preferred size to something you think reasonable.
The double of what is there should be more than sufficient.

You may also select the app and press Command-I on the keyboard.
The Command key is usually mapped to left Alt on PC keyboards.

Hmm...I tried increasing it to 2000, and then to 4000, and finally to 5000, but none of that seems to work. When I try to access the Poker games, I get an error message: "Sorry, a system error occurred. "Boxcars Casino TM" error type 10."

An error type 10 can have a lot of reasons, probably not that much game related.
On the emulator side, try checking the "Ignore Illegal Memory Accesses" box
and uncheck the "Enable JIT Compiler" box for a try.

On the Mac side, can you move the game files to a fresh MacOS volume?
Maybe repairing your volume with Disk First Aid and renewing the desktop file could help.

Disk First Aid, if you don´t have one: http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/disk-first-aid
The desktop file can be most easily repaired with this: http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/techtool-117

Any luck with MiniVMac II so far?

In its readme it writes that it is supporting from system 7.1.1 to 9. But for me, 7.5.3 doesen't expand a different game.
