Borland Reflex Plus on Mac OS 7.5.3

Post by Kyran »

Hi,

I try to run a very old database MAC program from Borland: Reflex Plus. Starting the programs blocks/freeze BasiliskII completely, no error message.
The system I run in BasiliskII is OS 7.5.3.
On my old Mac powerbook 170 the programs runs perfect and the system is also 7.5.3.

Any help suggestion is welcome.

What are your BII configuration settings? This is likely to do with JIT emulation or (not) ignoring specific error types.

Hi
Thanks for the reply. These are the settings:
Mac OS Ram :512 MB
Mac Model: Mac IIci (Mac OS 7.x)
CPU: 68030
ROM File: Color Classic
Don't use CPU Idle: active
Ignore Illegal Memory Accesses: active

I used already different ROM's and RAM sizes, but this didn't solve the problem.

I hope this info helps.
Kind regards.

Kyran, could you eventually upload your copy of Borland Reflex to Macintoshgarden, please?
Floppy images would be best, but anything else usable should do too.
Some here would give the database app a try for sure.

I would create an image of your app and the needed files with DiskCopy 6 and mount that one with MiniVMac.
A bootable 7.5.3 for MiniVMac is hosted here (5th DL): http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/macos-753-emulators

For opening your database, you might also consider the DOS sibling Borland Reflex 2.0, available at WinWorld PC.
DOS apps can be run in DOSBox or VirtualBox for example, handling files is not really comfortable, but doable.

MiniVMac and MiniVMac II do work well with your app and System 7.
Do you still have the help file or a sample database?
I´ll copy your app into a DiskCopy image, so it may be dropped onto the running MiniVMac screen.

Sorry no help files anymore, it’s all lost in history. Reflex is a ver strong and excellent datadase system.
Here is an interesting reference: https://books.google.be/books?id=BT8EAA ... us&f=false
Thanks!

Interesting. A friend gave me a DOS database back in the days, Clipper Database was its name methinks.
Alas, I never got far and lost interest.
So many Mac apps already lost in data nirwana, your file may be the very last one.
I did add the manual for Reflex 1.0 over at Macintoshgarden.
Maybe you could add a database file to play with, if its not confidential content?

Back on topic, the issue is possibly the colour classic ROM; I know I had lockups like that when I used mine.

See the MacROMan github repo linked at the bottom of https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... -Dk7QDyKPY if you need help.

I tried several ROM's all giving the same issue: starting Reflex Plus freezes the BasiliskII. Others programs runs fine.

Still hoping for a solution.

Thanks

Seems to be an app related issue.
No dice with Basilisk II Build 142 for Windows or Fusion PC either.
As MiniVmac and MiniVMac II do work, Reflex Plus is usable at least.

Reflex Plus is now running in Mini vMac. Problem the screen size is very very smal, it wojld be very usefull to increase the screen size. Is this possible and how can I do this?

Try Control-F ("Full screen toggle") or Control-M ("Magnify toggle").
Control-H ("Help") shows all available commands.

With Mini vMac, you can set a custom screen size at build time as well; I always compile a larger resolution. For System 6 and higher, any screen resolution will work with the OS (even though the original hardware didn't support it) -- for below System 6, I try to use X2 magnification mode and divide my resolution in half, as earlier OSes can behave oddly with larger screen resolutions.
