Basilisk - Cannot open ROM file ?

Post by Sebiohazard »

Hello everyone :)

I'm new to this forum I started in the world of Macintosh emulation :)

I followed this tutorial & unfortunately Basilisk does not work I still have this error message ?

Image

I have several ROMs in my folder but I do not know if the emulator asks for a specific name for the ROM to be recognized ?

Thanks best regards !

Did you do this step?
Switch to the “Memory/Misc” tab of the Basilisk II GUI. Click “browse” and select your ROM file. To boot the bootdisk from this guide, the Mac Model ID should be set to “MacIIci (MacOS 7.x). You can change this later.

Check this site for a suitable rom file for Basilisk:

http://www.redundantrobot.com/sheepshaver.html

Put the rom file in the your Basilisk folder and rename the rom file to Mac OS ROM and try to start BasiliskII.exe

Cat_7 advised to rename the ROM file to Mac OS ROM

However, from your description above it is not clear to what extend you followed the tutorial. Did you run the BasiliskIIGUI.exe? You will need to configure BasiliskII in BasiliskIIGUI before you launch BasiliskII itself.

The topic with the download links clearly states that you should first download and use the download that contains the BasiliskIIGUI and some other necessary files.

These are not applications that can be run simply by starting them. You need to install other software as well and you need to set up everything. I suggest that you start again from the beginning and follow the setup guide from the start. Do not skip instructions, every line in there is important.

For LodeRunner B/W and similar, I would recommend using MiniVMac, as thats the only Mac emulator with built in speed settings.
I seem to recall LodeRunner was way too fast with Basilisk II.

Adding games to your emulated HDD will usually need a installed Stuffit program, as Stuffit was THE app for arciving files on a Mac.
After installing, say Stuffit 5, the procedure usually is like this.
Download the .sit file in question to your host PC
Move the file to the emulated Mac´s HDD
Open it with Stuffit and inflate it.

Please use this, first DL, to install: https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/stuffit-expander-55
Look at the description on that page too. ;)

The .bin file is useless as it is. BIN indicates a binary (compressed) file.

You can use the zipped toast CD image file that 24bit points to above.

(Addition to explain what went wrong with the download that was linked from the tutorial:
The tutorial instructs you to drag the downloaded "stuffit_expander_55.bin" file to your install.hfv disk image using HFVExplorer and click "OK".
But then the tutorial erroneously continues that you can also bypass HFVExplorer and move the file from Windows to the emulated Mac using My Computer. That is probably what you did and that does not work.
Maybe that confusing sentence in the tutorial should be removed.)

Hello thanks for your answer I managed to install Stuffit Expander only using HFVExplorer !!! The other method with Windows workstation does not work...

Image

I do not understand what it's used for... the tutorial says that it is essential for launch games... but after installation, I launched Loade Runner & it always crashes why ?!

How to launch Lode Runner without crash ?!

You need to double-click the installer to install the Stuffit Expander application. Stuffit Expander is used to expand Stuffit (.sit) archives. Stuffit archives are (were) used on MacOS, much like for instance ZIP archives are used in Windows.

OK thanks but the only way to install Stuffit Expander is to go through HFVExplorer ?!

In the cases above, it depends on the downloaded file. If it is a .bin file, like the one that is linked to from the manual, you need to use HFVExplorer. The .zip file from Macintosh Garden can be unzipped in Windows and the resulting disk image file can then be added to the volumes list in the GUI.
