Can't find startup volume

Post by fantasticfungi »

Hi! I'm on Mac OS Ventura and am following the excellent setup guide but I'm getting the grey floppy icon with the blinking ? mark.

As suggested in the guide I went to MacintoshGarden and downloaded Mac_OS_9.0.4.toast and added that large file as a Volume in my SheepShaver preferences and clicked the box "CDROM".

Any idea what I'm doing wrong and why I can't boot up?

With this little info it is difficult to tell what could be wrong.

Did you save your settings and quit SheepShaver as described in the setup manual?

Yes, I saved the settings then quit SheepShaver as described in the manual.

I'm happy to provide more info, what info could I provide that would be most useful for diagnosing the problem?

Please post here the content of your prefs file:

Launch Terminal (in /Application/Utilities/) and type at the prompt

Code: Select all

open ~/.sheepshaver_prefs
followed by a return.
The file will open in your default text editor. Select all content and copy and paste it here in your reply.

The "Mac OS 9.0.4.toast" file does not appear in prefs.

You did add "OS9.img" as CDROM to the volumes list. That is probably the OS9 boot disk from Redundant Robot. Do not use that file.

Remove "OS9.img" from the volumes list and make sure the "Mac OS 9.0.4.toast" file is added properly to the volumes list as CDROM.

Then try again.

That did it! Thank you so much!

Now I gotta figure out how to install an old 1990s version of Adobe Premiere that I found on MacintoshRepository. Do you know of a good guide that can help me figure out how to install an old program like Premiere?

I suppose you followed the setup guide further, installed macOS and removed the toast CD image from the list, enabled sound, etc.

About how to install software, that is a new question and better start a new topic for it. Give more info than you wrote above, like which version, in/on what kind of media it is presented (what kind of archive, disk image, etc.).
