You had me confused for a moment... STI is the Atari ST Image format. SIT is the Stuffit Archive format, which was the standard format to preserve content on the Mac from 1987 to 2001.

If you find a file in Stuffit format, it is meant to be unarchived within a Mac OS environment. It is similar to a Zip file for Windows... except it also stores the resource fork and the file type and creator and other metadata associated with classic Macintosh files. If you use https://stuffit.com/ Stuffit Expander for Windows to expand a Stuffit archive on Windows, you'll likely end up with a set of unusable files, as Windows doesn't understand resource forks and Mac metadata (even though NTFS was designed to be fully compatible, but that's another story....)

TL;DR: .sit indicates a Stuffit file that needs to be extracted within Mac OS (System 3 through OS X) via Stuffit Expander. Many Mac OS versions come with Expander bundled; if you're running an emulator and don't have Expander installed, you can mount an .img file containing the installer from https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/stuffit-expander-55 for the Mac II and later, or https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/stuffit-expander-402 if you've got an older 68000 mac/emulated Mac and System 7.0-7.5.5, or https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/stuffit-expander-351 if you've got an older OS version (System 0.8 - System 6).

Hello & thank you for your response!

Sorry, I was wrong, it is indeed the SIT format and not the Atari ST format looooooooooool. I installed Stuffit software on Mac OS 7.5.3 (because the Windows version corrupts files as you said).

But the problem persists because when I mount the SIT file of the game in Basilisk when starting Mac OS 7.5.3 I get a message telling me that the disk must be initialized ?! So it is not visible by Mac OS & cannot be opened by Stuffit... how to do it ?!

Thanks :)

.sit files are not disk images. You cannot mount them in the emulator. The file needs to be imported into the emulator and then unpacked there by Stuffit Expander. Resulting files can then be used in the emulated environment. If the resulting file is a disk image, you can export that image file to the host and mount it in the emulator.

If the .sit file contains only a "stuFfed" (packed by Stuffit) image file, you can also try to "unstuff" (unpack) it using Stuffit Expander for Windows. Most image files can be mounted fine in an emulator even when they lost their resource fork and metadata.

You mentioned your host system, but you did not mention which emulator you use.

You are running BasiliskII in Windows. Don't you have the "My Computer" icon enabled? See volumes tab in GUI settings.

Hello indeed with the "My Computer" option I was able to copy the SIT file of the game & decompress it.

Then I obtained the ISO file of the game I mounted it in Basilisk I followed the installation instructions (i.e. copy the game directory to the HDD) but unfortunately I got a message error:

You'll probably need to use the Virtual CD Utility to mount it within the emulator instead of mounting it from the UI. It's probably looking for a CD-ROM drive with content loaded instead of just a mounted locked HFS disk with the right name (which I believe is what the emulator presents to the System).

If it doesn't work with the Virtual CD Utility, you could try Toast.

OK thank you for your answer, are you talking about Virtual CD for Windows or another software like Daemon Tools ?

How do I get the virtual CD drive to be recognized in Basilisk ? Thanks

As can be seen in the screen shots. The CD image file was not locked. First try this:

In Windows, with BasiliskII not running, right-click the image file, and set it to “read only” in the “properties” menu. This way most CD image files will be recognised as read-only CD in the emulator.

Another way that should work is to not add the image file to the volumes list in the GUI, but to enter its full path in the CD-ROM drive box in the GUI.

If all this does not work, you can use the Virtual CD/DVD-ROM Utility (also known as VirtualCD Imager) that adespoton suggests. It is a 68k utility to be run inside BasiliskII and it is among the utility downloads in our wiki. It is guaranteed to work. There is no manual, but you can probably figure out how to use it.

Hello thank you very much for your help :)

I was finally able to play this mystical game by making the ISO file read-only !
