On a macOS host, I was wondering whether it would be possible to have QEMU directly access a USB network adapter providing Mac OS 9 with low layer Ethernet access in order to run AppleTalk via DDP.
There seem to be USB adapters that work plug-and-play in OS 9. But how far developed is QEMU in regards to passing them through? Just asking for your expertise/opinions before buying any hardware.
If this works it would be an alternative for the abandoned kernel extensions required by tuntaposx. At least when emulating Mac OS 9.
USB to Ethernet adapter w/ MacOS 9 in QEMU?

Re: USB to Ethernet adapter w/ MacOS 9 in QEMU?
Hi,
Passing through most if not all usb devices currently has Qemu running into problems. The problem has probably been identified but it has not yet been fixed.
The tuntaposx issue can be solved by using the vmnet option available in the latest macOS versions. We have an experimental build available with that functionality.
See here under experimental builds (second post on the page): viewtopic.php?t=8848
On at least two different occasions there have been submissions to the qemu mailing list suggesting patches to allow using the vmnet option, but none have been accepted yet.
Best,

Wow, thank you – I had completely missed that one!

Cat_7,
Thanks again for posting this experimental build. I just set up a guest system using it and it does a perfect job in “AppleTalking”!
