Web browser and Email Client for Basilisk II

Post by LisaXL »

Hi,

I would like to know if there is a web browser for Basilisk II that can surf Internet. Even ICAB 2.9.9 doesn't work with https websites. So I am unable to surf most websites. As for email clients, I can't find one that will work with Gmail. The one that works on in PowerPC version.

Any help is appreciated.

You're better off to use a proxy. That being said, there IS an ongoing project to bring a full modern stack of clients to 68K Macs.

There's also https://github.com/cy384?tab=repositories which provides SSL2 for OpenTransport and SSHeven, an SSH client for System 7.1 and later.

And there's FrogFind, a System 7-friendly search engine that works in iCab and Netscape 4.

For email, Mulberry 2.1 or later might work, as might SweetMail.

Thanks a lot for your reply. I tried Sweetmail and Mulberry 68K versions, but both of them can not support SSL/TLS encryption required by Gmail. Can someone who has set it up for Basilisk help to give me a lead?

I tried the Outlook Express, it supports SSL encryption. But it does not allow "@" sign for username. Almost all the modern mail service provider(including Gmail) require enter the full email address for the username. So I can not get it to work with Gmail.

By the way, does anyone know a free public pop3 service that allow username without the @ sign? Or without SSL/TLS? Thanks a lot.

I couldn't believe, that the @ symbol is missing and you are right.

Checking the keyboard menu under the apple logo did help:

<alt>+<shift>+1

Now I could create my mail for john@appleseed.

But I couldn't configure MS Outlook Express to send mails.
Receiving mails works like a charm, but SMTP settings are not supported by my mail provider. Old clients could simply contact the SMTP server without password, that is not the standard anymore.

Also SSL doesn't work. Outlook Express 5 seems to have SSL support, however I was forced to enable sending clear text over the wire. J

For gmail, there seems to be a setting for 'less secure' clients.
Not recommended, but possibile.

I feel Outlook Express 5 email settings are considered as not secure anymore. Thus it will be difficult to find a serious mail provider.
I considered hotmail, but the browser needs to support https.
