Sheepshaver was working then I changed RAM
Hi all I'm running Ventura on an M1
I installed and had Sheepshaver running. Then I tried to change the RAM to 2048 in the preferences and Sheepshaver will no longer open. I've tried doing a new install, using a new rom etc. with no luck. Any idea?
I also can't seem to see a prefs file in my home sheepshaver directory, even from terminal.
Thanks,
Trevor

Re: Sheepshaver was working then I changed RAM
Not sure why you would want that much RAM in SheepShaver. Normally, 1024MB is more than you will ever need.
You can edit the prefs file in a text editor:
Launch Terminal (in /Apps/Utilities/) and type at the prompt followed by a return.
The file will open in your default text editor.
Find the ramsize line and change line to Save and close.
You can edit the prefs file in a text editor:
Launch Terminal (in /Apps/Utilities/) and type at the prompt
Code: Select all
open ~/.sheepshaver_prefs
The file will open in your default text editor.
Find the ramsize line and change line to
Code: Select all
ramsize 1073741824
Re: Sheepshaver was working then I changed RAM
What's strange is there is no ".sheepshaver_prefs" anywhere.
I'm getting this error in terminal.
Is there a default prefs file anywhere I could modify and point to the volume or something?
Code: Select all
The file /Users/*****/.sheepshaver_prefs does not exist.

Re: Sheepshaver was working then I changed RAM
Did you use a regular SheepShaver download and setup as described in our setup manual? Then there should be a .sheepshaver_prefs file in your Home folder, unless you removed it with the 'Delete Prefs File' script that is included in the SheepShaver folder download.
If you used a .sheepvm virtual machine setup, the prefs file is inside the .sheepvm package.
If the prefs file does indeed not exist (anymore), you will need to do the setup configuration again from scratch. You wrote that you tried a new rom file. Use only the rom file that is recommended in our setup manual and make sure it is renamed "Mac OS ROM", without the quotation marks and without file name extension. You can check the extension in Finder Info for the file.
Did you also download a new SheepShaver application? Make sure it is not used in the location where the download landed or where the archive is expanded. Always move the expanded file to the location where it is to be used before launching it.
BTW: When a working SheepShaver setup stops working, the problem may be in the settings or in the virtual HD, never in the rom file or in the application.

Re: Sheepshaver was working then I changed RAM
Thanks I did use that script so it must have nuked it.
I'm gonna try starting from scratch and redownloading as well. I've tried with the existing downloads with no long but will report back. Appreciate your help.
Edit I've tried redownloading everything and moving to new locations and working through all the steps that had it working originally. Nothing is working.
I open SheepShaver and it quickly crashes (similar to how it behaves when the rom is misnamed) however everything is spelled correctly.

I'm using the Old World Rom from Redundant just as I did before but this is a new download to a new directory with - SheepShaver_universal_20221222.zip

Re: Sheepshaver was working then I changed RAM
When a new SheepShaver installation quits on launch, that usually has one of two causes:
1. The rom file is not named correctly
The image of the folder you show does not show whether or not the rom file has a file name extension. An extension is usually hidden in the Finder. You can only check it, and if necessary remove the extension, in Finder info panel for the file (select the file and hit command-I).
2. The application is not moved correctly.
Try this:
- Copy the SheepShaver application (only the application) from the SheepShaver folder to a different location, for instance your desktop.
- Trash the original application.
- Move the copy back to where the original was.

Re: Sheepshaver was working then I changed RAM
Hi all,
I have exactly the same problem. I ran sheepshaver, installed mac os 9.0.4 and then wanted to upgrade to 2048mb of ram.
The virtual machine gave me a message saying that I should either shut down or restart. I turned off the machine and since then, sheepshaver refuses to launch.
I deleted everything (including config files), restarted my mac, but nothing, still the same problem. It's like there's always a preference file somewhere blocking the open.
Would it be possible to reinject the preference files to force the config? (I can't find a sample file to be able to adapt it).
Mac OS 12.6.3 / Mac Intel Core i7
I copy the crash report below, just in case...
Thank you in advance for your assistance

Re: Sheepshaver was working then I changed RAM
If you would not have "deleted everything", the solution would have been a simple editing of the prefs file in a text editor to reverse the changed setting.
Exactly what is "everything" that you deleted?

Re: Sheepshaver was working then I changed RAM
Thanks for your reply.
I managed to get it working again!
I created a more or less empty preferences file (recopied from Basilisk to have a correct structure).
I saved and relaunched SheepShaver, and it works now.
So I was able to change the settings (and this time I saved the preferences file).
So Sheepshaver does not support 2gb of RAM?

Re: Sheepshaver was working then I changed RAM
Great! Nice when users find their own solution.
No, SheepShaver does not support 2GB of RAM. We advise 512MB or 1024MB, 512 is plenty and 1024 is probably more than you will ever need.
