Basilisk II, AppleTalk, and Windows 7

Post by Byte Knight »

Hey all,

My goal is to use my Windows 7 computer, which hosts my BBS and is on 24/7, to also host the GlobalTalk network in Basilisk II. The reason that I need to use Basilisk II is that I'm running Apple Internet Router on System 7.6.1, and I can't get it to work with SheepShaver no matter which ROM I use. Anyway my first step is to get AppleTalk working. I've installed OpenVPN Tap v2.6.10 on my Windows 7 machine and can now select OpenVPN TAP-Windows6 (not sure why it isn't Windows7?) under the Network tab in Basilisk II Settings but get "An error occurred attempting to use Ethernet" when trying to set up AppleTalk over Ethernet. When I go to the Windows 7 network control panel, I get the "Network cable unplugged" under the OpenVPN Tap-Windows connection. So my first question is, and please forgive me since I'm not a Windows user, do I need to be connected to a server like IPVanish for this all to work?

Thanks in advance!

You'd first have to bridge your default ethernet connection with the tap device to get appletalk running.

Thanks for the quick response. I bridged the Local Area Network and OpenVPN Tap-Windows6 connections and selected "Network Bridge" under the Network tab in Basilisk II Settings. When I go into the AppleTalk control panel I can see my AppleTalk zone but when I try to save my settings I still get "An error occurred attempting to use Ethernet." Connecting to my file server via IP works fine. Any other suggestions?

Surely you are selecting the name of your tap device in the network settings tab in the Basilisk GUI? (At Ethernet Interface) Did you name it Network Bridge?

Basilisk is quite finicky regarding network support. Are you following any guide about how to set up the network?
Are there any examples of people running this with Basilisk and system 7.6? I read you need 7.1 with mactcp, but perhaps that is old info.

I've seen some reports (also here on the forum) of people joining while running Qemu with system 7.1

I had the same setup and encountered the same issue using TAP interfaces with a bridge to my VMware NAT network on Mac OS 7.6.1 (68k).

Switching to the ROM file 1993-02 - F1ACAD13 - Quadra, Centris 610,650,800.ROM in Basilisk II resolved the problem and allowed me to activate AppleTalk. My usual ROM, 1991-10 - 420DBFF3 - Quadra 700&900 & PB140&170.ROM, gave the same error as OP, though TCP/IP still worked fine with it.

I experienced this issue on both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 10.

That lines up with https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... Dk7QDyKPY/ - although your timestamps are off from mine slightly?

Some ROMs just don't handle AppleTalk properly in various emulators.
