RUNNING GAMES

Hey everyone. New guy here.

Alright so, I'm just gonna be quick and to-the-point about this.

I'm trying to run a specific game on Sheepshaver.

What I'd appreciate, is if one of you, who uses these Mac Emulators quite alot (either Sheepshaver OR Basilik II) - ((and especially for games)) would simply try and unpack, install, and then RUN, this particular game, and then -

TELL ME HOW YOU DID IT.

Anyway - for this endevour, I shall be using - Sheepshaver.

Now, as far as asking me which version I'm using and what settings and blah blah blah - well, No.
How bout this: How bout you tell ME what settings/versions/etc YOU were running, when YOU made it WORK, and then I'll just use YOUR settings...
That seems to make much more sense to me...

Anyway, I'm using a Windows 11 laptop, with Sheepshaver, Running Mac OS 8.1 with update.
And I'm trying to run the game called:

- "LUNICUS" -

So...

If you truly DO need more technical info from me, then just let me know. (I'm a complete newb when it comes to Emulators, so, bear with me...)

And, I'm sorry for my brash manner, btw, but... I'm just sooooo tired of trying to make this game work...

I just want to be able to hop on, and play it any time I want, without a fuss. I can't stand these technical/buggy issues any longer, it's driving me crazy. Blegh.

Anyway, thanks in advance to anyone who can help me.

Your suggestions and help will be MUCH appreciated, I assure you...

Thanks,

- Z

It seems to run fine for me in System 7.5.5. I am also running SheepShaver in Windows 11.

You might be having a problem because you are trying to run it in MacOS 8.1, whereas the game was released in 1994.

System 7.5.5: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/lh8zqes9 ... d931p&dl=0

Lunicus CD image: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/b0zxs0gz ... fvc5g&dl=0

In your SheepShaver prefs file (assuming you keep your prefs file in the same folder as your disk images and the exe), mount both of the above images using:

disk hd100.img
disk Lunicus.img

On the system disk there is a folder called "Large Install". The game runs fine for me, and I would also suggest not using the "PPC" patch offered on Macintosh Garden, as I tried it with that but it failed to launch, saying it could not switch to 256 colors, even when the bit depth was already set to 256 colors.

If you want to run MacOS 7.5 with SheepShaver, you also need to use an old world rom
You can find one if you search the net for redundantrobot sheepshaver

Thank you both (Almeath & Cat_7) for your suggestions.

@ Almeath -

1. Yes, I was/am aware of both that PPC version, as well as that 256 color issue on several games. Its very odd.
2. I remained on version 8.1, to test first, before trying 7.5
3. I don't know why the .img files I've tried in the past didn't work, but, well, they just didn't. I mounted them as you said, unstuffed/mounted when I had to, etc etc. But this time, it worked!
4. I don't know how you did it, but I didn't realize you could just send a HDD image like that, and when downloaded and added, it would just boot like that straight into the system, so, that was pretty cool.

Anyway, thank you. : )

@ Cat_7 -

Thanks for the suggestion. I am currently using one of the old world ROMs, and its working just fine.

Thank you both for your responses and suggestions. I will now continue to play around with version 7.5, and try everything out on that system instead, to see if I can get better/more consistent results.

Till next time,
Happy Emulating! : )

Glad to hear it worked for you. Some games in SheepShaver can just be quirky, particularly those that are speed sensitive or which expect specific hardware feedback that isn’t fully emulated.

While MAME now offers a purer hardware emulation environment, it carries a steeper learning curve to properly configure and doesn’t currently support PPC emulation.

I’ve perfected both setups with many games, so if you have difficulties with any others just drop me a line or post here and I’ll help if I can.

Hello again everyone. Thank you for the previous responses.

However, I have a new issue for you.

This is no doubt a very simple fix or tweak, but again - very new to this whole thing, sorry.

Here's the exact Error text I'm getting when trying to run a game.

" The CD "_______" could not be found. Please insert it into a CD-ROM drive, and try again."
ID = 0

The situation is: I have an ".img" file of the game. So, when booting up the GUI, I add it to the list. When I enter the OS, there it is.
Since it doesn't seem to need unpacking, I just mount the image with Disk Copy. Then, a CD -like image pops up.
I then use this to install the game. I've tried to install it onto the desktop, as well as the actual MAC HDD, in a separate folder.
I've tried changing the Colors settings too, just in case.

I have a feeling I'm just skipping a basic step, or otherwise adding an unnecessary one.
Or perhaps I need a specific program to do it, or -
Perhaps it's one of those issues where I actually have to do something to the .img file on the Windows side first, beFORE I get into the Mac Os - or perhaps vice/versa?

Anyway, as usual, let me know if I need to provide more information first. Any info helps!
(Btw, I'm running OS 8.1, and this game came out in 1996, so, it should be a good fit, theoretically...)

Thanks again guys. Getting to run these old Mac programs helps to preserve my sanity, hahaha. : )

When you use the .img file in the volumes list in the GUI, try right-click the file in Windows, and set it to “read only” in the “properties” menu. This will usually convince the game that the actual read only CD is mounted in the emulator.

Thank you for the response Ronald.

Result:

No effect.

- I did this, then added it to the GUI list before starting.
- When in the system, I clicked on the image floating on the desktop, and it mounts or unpacks or whatever, and a CD image appears.
- I double click on that, and a folder pops up, with an installer - so I install it.
- Then, I choose the install path as the native Mac HDD, in a separate game folder. (should I not do this?)
- Then, once installed, I go into said game folder, and click on the game's executable file, and then:

The Error pops up.

Again - Do you think it's just a version issue? I'm running 8.1, so perhaps the 7.x would work better?
The game came out in 96, so, I figured the 8.1 would be a better fit, but maybe not.

It looks like your img contains another disk image. Perhaps dragging that disk image to the HD and then mounting it helps.
You could also point us to where you got the disk image so we can see for ourselves.

No effect.

And, sure - The game is called, "Prime Target" and can be easily found on multiple sites in multiple formats.

I currently have:

- Prime Target.img
- Prime Target.toast
- Prime Target.sit

I've fiddled around with each of them every way I know of, but to no avail.
(Hence, why I'm here...)

So far, I've:
- Made sure each file has, "Read only" checked (on the Windows side)
- Tried to Mount ("Add") each in the GUI list before booting up
- Tried to drag them each over from the "My Computer" option within the Mac OS
- I've used Stuffit & Disk Copy where/when ever they seem to be needed/required (is there another Disc-image-mounting program I might need?)
- I've tried to open / mount / unstuff / install each one from the Mac's Desktop, as well as putting the files in the actual HDD first, and then trying

All to no avail so far...

However - I am still hopeful, because why? Because I've had it working before! (Granted, it was ages ago now, so I can't remember what meticulous combo of things I did to make that happen, darn it all! ) - - (( I'm also hoping it wasn't using Basilisk instead... I honestly can't remember...))

Also, I would upload screenshots, but, I tried to drag it in but it wouldn't take, and *is embarrased* I don't know how to add an image using the button provided, I admit. (Like I said, total technical-newb here, so, thanks for your patience...)

Anyway - Are there other in-Emulation-settings I should tweak? Am I running the wrong ROM file?
I mean... Everything else with the OS seems to be functioning normally - it just keeps saying;
"The CD "Prime Target" could not be found. Please insert it in a CD ROM drive and try again - ID = 0 "

So, yep. Here we are again.

I shall eagerly await your responses. (Again - thanks for your patience with me! Sorry!) : /

Try finding another version (such as ISO) of the game if you can. Prime Target works and even runs great in Sheepshaver. Only problem with it is the mouse does not work well so you better get used to keyboard up and down aiming. :)

For the music to work be sure to run the CD as a CD in the CD section, not loading it as an HDD in the standard loading area of the GUI. I struggled for over a year before finally figuring this out the hard way.

I was able to get this working in the same System 7 installation used with Lunicus, noted above.

The BIN/CUE and pre-installed game on a hard drive image are available here:

Hard drive: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/0uq6q91b ... dzjk4&dl=0
BIN/CUE: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/991xs3kt ... we26b&dl=0

As with the Lunicus installation, ensure your preferences file is pointing to:

disk hd100.img
cdrom PrimeTarget.cue

I am using the latest version of SheepShaver for Windows, with a suitable 'old world' ROM.

The CD audio works fine - the tracks play in the Apple CD Audio Player as well as in-game. The 1.2 patch is applied.

Hello,
I've been reading this thread carefully, as I've been trying to run Prime Target for years.
almeath, thanks for the images.
I'm struggling with one part. As usual, I feel stupid while posting on this board : on October 19th, Taiyaki wrote : " be sure to run the CD as a CD in the CD section, not loading it as an HDD in the standard loading area of the GUI.". Again, feeling very stupid, but I don't know how to do that. There is only one section in the Volumes section of my SS GUI app. Using latest Windows build of SS. How do I specifically load a volume as a CD?
Thanks in advance and have a great day,
bigb

I'm on Windows too. So what you do is in the GUI on the Volumes tab (the first one generally), you type in your volume in the cd rom drive area, but since it doesn't take copy paste text you need to manually type it in (for example: C:\Mac OS\Prime Target.iso). Or if you can you could edit the prefs file and there you can copy paste the path. You open that up with notepad and you edit the second line to something like:
cdrom C:\Mac OS\SheepShaver OS 7.6.1 for Prime Target\Prime Target.cue

The above is just an example. Hope this helps.

Yes, in my instructions above I make an assumption that the supporting files (drives and images) are kept in the same location as the SheepShaver executable and preferences file, so the full path is not required. If you keep your drives and images elsewhere, you do have to provide a full path.

Hello,
I took a little while before trying again, but I can confirm it now works.
Thank you almeath and Taiyaki.
