Hello to all the Full Throttlers,

this post goes to all users, who wanted to run the LucasArts Mac game Full Throttle in any PPC Mac OS 9 emulator and witnessed sound stuttering problems, due to the Virtual Memory Setting must be on in order to get the emulation work properly.

I've just successfully ran this game with all the perfect functioning sound quality in the 2024-07-24 Intel Qemu-system-68k Quadra 800 Mac OS 8.1 emulation on my 2014 Mac mini with macOS 12.7.6, without the sound stuttering which was present in Qemu-system-ppc and Sheepshaver, that was mentioned in diverse posts in the past.

After freshly installing Mac OS 8.1 the Virtual Memory Setting is per default set to off, which is the key point in getting this game working sound-wise.

Hope this helps.

Best Greets,

Michael

You can also run it with VM enabled under Mac OS 9 if you set memory to 1022MB -- Virtual Memory gets disabled if you have 1024MB or more. With today's fast storage, 1022MB of RAM and 1022MB of virtual memory is more than enough in OS 9 (and since you can only go as far as 1.5GB addressable memory in OS 9 otherwise, is the better choice under emulation).

That's such a brilliant move! So this makes all applications need less RAM automatically, right? (and probably a few more benefits IIRC) I wonder if this is also true for earlier Classic OSes too or just OS 9? (I'm thinking about my emulated 7.6.1 and 8.1 SS and BIIs)

AFAIK, Virtual Memory has a hard limit of "below 1024MB". But on BII, I can't say I've ever allocated more than 32MB RAM.

Ah, excellent point! I checked my BII emulation and I've got it running with 512 mb, but most of it's not even being used!
