Thought of this again just now. It's not over yet, but there have been some, uh, bumps in the road.

Re: Are there any good emulation options for playing old Mac OS X games?
Are there really a lot of games from that period that don't have equivalent ports to other platforms..?bribri wrote: Mon Mar 03, 2025 7:25 pm Too bad the options are still limited. Hopefully at some point there'll be a way of revisiting games from the early days of Mac OS X without needing to have working original hardware on hand.

Also, I recall there should be in-game music playing in the background, but this is not present when I play the game (I did the Full Install), though other sound effects are there. The game uses Redbook CD audio for the music, I think? Perhaps it is freezing whenever it is trying to cue up the ...

The overkill method would be to run it in a virtual machine like PCem, though there's probably a more elegant solution.

Re: Can a SuperDisk USB read 800k Macintosh floppies, even on a PC?
In the days of ISA slots in PCs, there were add-in cards that made it possible for the internal floppy drive to read Mac 800Kb disks (maybe also 400 though I don't remember). Now, as far as I know, the only practical way to read those disks is to use an old Mac. Does anyone know of an alternative ...

Can a SuperDisk USB read 800k Macintosh floppies, even on a PC?
I remember working in a Macintosh computer lab around 20 years ago where each machine was equipped with an external SuperDisk USB Drive. I happen to have stumbled across one of these recently - Imation model SD-USB-M, to be specific.

How unfortunate that this sort of thing is still causing problems after all this time.

Re: How to handle old ".rsrc" files
If Executor and HFV Explorer aren't options, then there is a utility included with netatalk that can be used to convert AppleDouble back to MacBinary, previously discussed in https://emaculation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=53615 . MacBinary files can then be safely decoded in System 7.5 with Stuffit ...

Re: How to handle old ".rsrc" files
Well, if they're AppleDouble, then if I'm not mistaken, HFVExplorer would require "SaintEdit 1.1.rsrc" to be renamed to "%SaintEdit 1.1", and would also expect a second zero-byte file named "SaintEdit 1.1" to represent the data fork. (A zero-byte file can easily be created from the Windows Explorer ...

That's called "Apple Double" format, and is used, among other places, by SheepShaver and Basilisk II on Windows in the shared folders. Don't Sheepshaver and Basilisk use folders named ".finf" and ".rsrc" for storing resource fork data? I've never been entirely clear on whether the data stored ...

In the interests of completion, I thought I might mention MacOpener here, which I stumbled upon the other day despite never having encountered it previously. It seems it went through quite a few iterations.

Re: Unarchiver and Mini vMac
I had hoped that with the sources of HFV Explorer becoming available, some sort of integration with The Unarchiver would be feasible, thus obliterating the need for Expander forever. Maybe some day.
